Weston Gilmer is a 2007 switch-hitting shortstop from Pinson Valley HS, residing in Pinson, AL. He has a strong, stout build on his 6'0" 195 lb. frame. Gilmer has a nice all-around skill set and likely is getting a lot of attention from D1 programs, particularly as a talented switch-hitting middle infielder. From the left side he hits with a slightly open stance. His hands make a bit of an inside out path and he has a flat swing plane and good bat speed. Gilmer has some present day power from the left side and will continue to develop more, which will play from gap to gap. From the right side he showed a quick bat and stayed inside the ball well. There was some down angle in his swing plane, which can create backspin at contact and some resulting carry type power. He seemed more aggressive from the right side than the left. In the field Gilmer showed that he has good hands and that his feet work well. He was quick with the double play turn and has an above average arm. Range may be an issue for some to allow him to stay at shortstop, but all of his other abilities are solid for the position. It is also conceivable that his bat will play at 3rd base. He is a good middle infielder though and should be given the opportunity to play his way out of the middle before someone makes that decision for him. Gilmer ran 4.52 home/1st with a 7.35 60 yard time. Gilmer is a solid D1 prospect that should be able to contribute pretty quickly. It would seem now that he has a future in pro ball, after his college career.

Weston Gilmer is a 6' 190 pound 2007 right handed pitcher and shortstop from Pinson Valley High School in Pinson, Alabama who was named to the Top Prospect Team. He has a mature body with very good strength. Weston throws from a high 3/4 arm slot and has very good mechanics. He has a long loose arm action and seems to be a power pitcher in the making. His fastball was very lively and had good sink down in the zone at 89 mph. He also showed good command of his fastball by hitting his spots. He threw a spike curveball at 72 mph with tight 12/6 rotation. He also mixed in a change up at 78 mph. Gilmer threw 84 mph across the infield during the workout which also showed his arm strength. At the plate, he is a switch hitter who has big time power potential from the left side. He has good bat speed and gets good extension while hitting for power to all fields. He is very balanced and it looks like his swing is a little shorter from the right side. Weston is a good two way prospect who is also a good student with a 3.0 gpa.

Weston Gilmer -- Gilmer is a strong, physical freshman from Alabama. He lists himself as a primary infielder but we were more impressed with him as a pitching prospect. Gilmer has a particularly strong upper half that he uses to generate an 84-86 mph fastball that held steady for 3 innings. It looks like he could throw hard all day. Gilmer’s curveball and change up were both quality pitches as well and he showed especially good feel for a change up. It was easy to forget that Gilmer was a freshman when he was pitching. Gilmer’s actions and body type profile him as a third baseman in the field. He’s a switch hitter who we liked better from the left side of the plate. Gilmer hits from a quiet approach with a quick, line drive type of swing and hit much better against live pitching in games than he did in batting practice. Depending on how much he grows, he could end up being a pitching prospect or a position prospect or maybe both at the college level.
