2005 Spring Top Prospect
Durant is a junior middle infielder from Iowa with a slender, young body. He’s one of the slicker defensive middle infielders we’ve seen in Iowa in recent years. Durant’s actions are smooth and quick and he has very good range, especially up the middle from shortstop. His hands can play anywhere. Durant’s throwing mechanics are solid, but arm strength is his weakest defensive tool and might move him to second base at the college level. He still has time to further develop this part of his game. You can see Durant’s quickness in the difference in his 60 and home to first times. He ran the 60 in 7.03, but was 4.20 from the right side to first. Usually that 60 time equates to about a 6.7 60. Offensively, Durant hits with quiet hands and good balance through the ball. He generates good bat speed for his size and relative strength and showed a good ability to make solid contact and hit the ball to all fields. Durant finishes high and extended on his swing, which might equate to some power in the future. Durant is a strong student who should have plenty of opportunities to play college baseball.
