Preston Claiborne is a 2006 right handed pitcher/third baseman from Carrollton, TX with a good body that shows strength at 6-3, 195 lbs. We've seen Claiborne frequently over the past few years and go back and forth almost every time it seems on whether his future is brighter on the mound or at third base. He probably looked a bit better on the mound at the National. Claiborne has a clean, smooth delivery and uses his strong lower half well to create power to the plate. His fastball topped out at 89 mph with plus arm side running action at times. Claiborne threw two types of breaking balls, a hard 74 mph curveball that had very good depth and bite to it and a slower 66 mph curveball that was more a get me over type of change of pace to get an early strike on a hitter. Claiborne also threw a low 80's change up. As a pitcher, Claiborne looks like the type who could quickly add some velocity if he wasn't playing a position every day and be a workhorse starter type. As a player, Claiborne plays a solid third base with plenty of arm strength and good lateral movement. He hits out of a tall stance and has very strong hands with the bat. He shows raw pull power and very good bat speed, with more power to come in the future. Claiborne has signed to attend Tulane, which is one of the premier programs in the country at developing two-way players. Claiborne could be one of their next top level prospects.

Preston Claiborne is a 2006 RHP/3B from Carrollton, TX. We’ve seen Claiborne pitch many times in WWBA events and at showcases, and although he pitched well in Waco, this was the first time that we began thinking that Claiborne might be just as good a position prospect as a pitching prospect. Claiborne’s performance on the mound was consistent with what we’ve seen before. He has a silky smooth arm action and an athletic, on-line delivery that will need little tweaking. Claiborne threw a live fastball at 85-87 mph and maintained his velocity from the stretch. His second best pitch was a 79 mph change that was a potential plus pitch for him. Claiborne’s 73 mph slider has good spin and break and is a better pitch than his 67 mph curveball, but both have serious potential. What opened our eyes about Claiborne on the other side of the ball was that he was absolutely dialed in at the plate during the showcase. The ball jumped off his bat, including one double off the left field wall off an 88 mph Ryan DeLaughter fastball, just about every time at bat. Claiborne has a quiet, calm load at the plate and explodes through the ball with above average bat speed. His arm works just as easily in the field as it does on the hill and he’s athletic enough to be a top notch defensive third baseman. Claiborne is a competitor who plays hard and is going to keep improving in our opinion. That's a bit scary because he's real good to begin with. Very good student too!
