LHP Mike Jacobson: We’ve seen Jacobson, a senior southpaw from Wisconsin, pitch many times at events and during the Spring League. Last fall he pitched well in Jupiter and was up to 86 mph, good velocity for a lefty. We haven’t seen that kind of speed from him this Spring, yet, but Jacobson threw well at the Showcase. He was consistently 82-83 mph with his fastball and was turning over a 2-seamer at 79 with good tailing action that was an effective different look. Jacobson’s curveball is mostly in the upper 60’s and his delivery makes this a deceptive pitch. Jacobson has a stiff, short arm action that effectively hides the ball from hitters and you don’t see his arm stroke until late. When he stays down in the zone and is mixing up his pitches, Jacobson can be very very effective.

Jacobson is a 6-2 southpaw from Wisconsin. He sat at 83 mph on his fastball in Fort Myers with typical left handed running action and topped out at 84-85 mph. Jacobson has a very busy delivery with lots of deceptive arm and leg movement but the negative aspect of this is that his release point and timing are often inconsistent and this makes it difficult to work the inside half to right handed hitters. Jacobson’s breaking ball is a big sweeping 67-69 mph curveball and he also throws a 76 mph change up. When he learns how to work the glove side of the plate, Jacobson will take a big step forward. His lively fastball and good breaking ball from the left side should create a lot of interest.

Jacobson is a very good looking Left handed pitcher at 6 foot 3 and 196 pounds. His body is lean and strong and should be able to easily add another 20 pounds in the next few years. He looks good in a uniform and fits the part on the hill. He comes from three-quarters with a good working arm that generated 81-84 mph fastballs without effort. His curveball was clocked between 65-68 mph and showed an early break. If he throws that pitch harder as he gets stronger it could be a tough pitch to hit. He showed good life with his fastball and we like the direction this tall left-hander is headed. We will be looking for him in the coming months to track his progress and will not be surprised to see him even better in the near future.
