Michael Spencer is a 5'10" senior catcher from Indiana. He has good body life and quickness for the position, which helped him with his receiving and pop times, as well as his base running. He runs well with good instincts. Spencer has a short, wristy swing with the wood bat with a downward path that maximizes contact at the cost of power and loft. He picked up a couple of hits during one of the showcase games. While Spencer’s arm strength was just playable, he was able to post respectable pop times because of his quickness. Spencer also threw three innings at the showcase, striking out six of the ten hitters he faced without allowing a hit. Spencer didn’t throw hard at 72-74 mph, but had a very deceptive delivery, a 67 mph slurvy breaking ball, and a good ability to throw strikes. Spencer is also an outstanding student off the field with top grades and test scores.

Michael Spencer is a 2005, 5'10" right handed hitting outfielder from Indiana with some nice body life and quickness. He ran a 7.26-60, but we had him as low as 4.41 from the right side on ground balls. Spencer has a short, compact swing and made good contact to the middle of the field in batting practice and in games. He has some back side collapse that costs him some of his power potential, but it looks like he has good bat head skills. Spencer also threw three effective innings on the mound, relying almost exclusively on a low 70’s slider that had good action. He could catch or play outfield in college as he has the ability to do both. Michael is an outstanding student.

Michael Spencer -- Spencer is a 5-10 right handed pitcher from Indiana with good athletic actions. He caught our attention in batting practice by hitting 10 straight strikes in fair territory, a much more rare (literally 2-3 times a showcase, tops, sometimes never) achievement than you’d expect. In fact, we would project Spencer to be a better hitter at the next level despite his listing himself as a primary pitcher. He runs fairly well and showed excellent body control. Spencer was very competitive during his 4 innings on the mound and had good deception to his mechanics. His fastball was 74-76 mph with a little bit of sink but Spencer pitched off his 64-67 mph curveball that had good biting action to it. He seems to throw several pitches at several different speeds. He’s an outstanding student off the field.

Michael is an intelligent hard working pitcher outfielder. His fastball wasn’t overpowering but he showed good command of all his pitches. He curve was good at 67 and change was effective at 69. He is a young wiry 05 and could really make a jump as he gains size and strength. He is a good athlete, runs well and and has good body control. He just needs to get stronger over the next couple years.
