Max Gonzalez is a 2005 catcher from Hialeah, Florida, with a 5'11", 195 lb. frame. Defensively he has a very strong arm (82 mph) with real quick feet along with quick transfers. Gonzalez can contain an opposing team's running game with his arm strength and sub 1.90 pop times. He is a line drive hitter with some good bat speed. Gonzales hits from an upright stance with good balance. He stayed in on some good breaking balls and hit them hard. He makes solid contact to the pull side with some power potential. Gonzalez will be very good at the next level with his catching ability, strong arm, and his potential with the bat.

Max Gonzalez is a 5'11", 185 lb. catcher from Hialeah, Florida. We’ve known for sometime that Gonzalez has one of the strongest arms in the 2005 class. He didn’t disappoint in Fort Myers, consistently throwing 81-82 mph from behind the plate, and putting up a couple of pop times in the 1.87-1.89 range. Gonzalez has the hands and athletic quickness to be a well rounded defensive catcher as well. Gonzalez’s offensive game is still developing. His balance at the plate is a little inconsistent. He has the hands and upper body strength to hit the ball very hard. He has the defensive skills to play at any college in the country. In fact, he has MLB catching skills.

Max Gonzalez -- Gonzalez is the younger brother of Giovanni Gonzalez, one of the top rated left handed pitchers in the 2004 class. The most notable similarity between the two is that they both play the game very, very hard and love to be on the field. The second most obvious similarity is that Max has top notch arm strength from behind the plate and can run the pop times down below 1.85. Max has a solid catcher’s build at 5-10, 180 lb but has good lower body life and runs well for a catcher. That athleticism, his arm strength and his approach to the game will make Gonzalez a top notch defensive catcher. What’s going to put Gonzalez close to his older brother’s prospect level, though, is his hitting ability. Max hits with a very calm and balanced set up, with a leg lift trigger and a quick, sharp swing. He smashed a couple of extra base hits in games that were shots and his strength, quickness and swing path will give Gonzalez the ability to both hit for average and for power in the future. Excellent 05 catching prospect.
