5/18/12: If it seems as if Tyler Gonzales has been on the scout map forever, that’s almost correct. As the nephew of Nationals cross checker Jimmy Gonzales (who helps organize the Nationals Area Code Games team), Gonzales first participated in the Area Code Games in 2009 coming out of his freshman year as a skinny shortstop and is a rare three year participant in the AC’s. Gonzales originally was a primary shortstop prospect and is still considered a potential two-way college performer should he end up at the University of Texas next year. He’s a plus athlete who is light on his feet despite average straight away running speed and has big arm strength at shortstop. His slender 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame keeps Gonzales from having the raw bat speed and strength to be a pro level position prospect, though. As Gonzales moved more to being a primary pitcher in 2010 and 2011, his stuff was fairly consistent and one began to wonder as a scout if he would be able to gain the strength and maintain consistent enough mechanics to take the next step forward as a pitching prospect. Gonzales' arm action is lightning quick coming through, which produced an 89-92 mph fastball for Gonzales as a sophomore and junior. His best pitch, though, was a low-80s slider that he threw approximately half the time that was sharp and big at times. Gonzales was able to take that next step this spring, however. His fastball, which is fairly straight, suddenly started sitting at 92-93 through entire starts and topping out at 95-96 mph. His slider picked up similar power and is now in the 85-87 mph range with the same huge shape and nasty biting action. What before was very solid raw stuff was now nasty raw stuff and Gonzales has been maintaining it from start to start Gonzales, as befits someone who comes from a baseball family, is considered to have off the chart make-up and a “ballplayer’s” approach to the game that will make him fit in comfortably at the professional level. At 19, he’s also a year older than most high school seniors and would be draft eligible again in 2014 if he decided to go to college.

Tyler Gonzales is a 2012 SS/RHP with a 6-2 170 lb. frame from San Antonio, TX who attends James Madison. Gonzales is a very interesting two way prospect, He uses a high 3/4's release point, fast, loose arm, projects well, throws strikes, needs to be watched closely on the mound, good, quick actions in the infield, throws carry well, strong arm. Aggressive swings, quick hands, attacks baseball, bat projects very well with continued added strength. High level talent that needs to be followed very closely.
