2004 South Top Prospect Showcase
Jonathan Vest is a 5'10/180 2005 OF/LHP from Robstown, TX. Vest is an athletic looking left hander with good physical strength who stood out in the workout portion of the showcase. He ran a 6.70-60 and showed that wasn’t a fluke by running a 4.05 down to first base on a ground ball to second base. Vest also showed big league arm strength from the outfield during drills by throwing 86 mph a couple of times and tracking the ball well in the outfield. He hits from a crouched wide stance with a late load and small stride and pops up through the ball with a short swing. Vest is too good an athlete to hit like he does, and could improve dramatically with the right coaching. Vest threw a couple of innings, too, and just as with his hitting, his mechanics covered up his natural arm strength. Vest has a funky pause just before his hand break that throws his timing off, and also appears to randomly vary his release points through most of the ¾’s spectrum. His fastball was 79-81 mph and he threw a curveball that was up to 74 mph and had a sharp, late bite to it. He could be much better than he showed with a different approach. Jonathan is a good student and he has a lot of natural athletic ability.
