John Blalock -- Blalock is listed at 6-0, 240 and has a big barrel chest and is thick throughout. His weight affects his pitching mechanics and hides what looks to be some good athletic and pitching talent. Blalock has a smooth, slow, balanced delivery and nice on-line mechanics to the plate. He threw 81 mph with good tailing life in his first inning of work but quickly tailed off to 75-76 for the next 2 innings. Aside from affecting his stamina, Blalock’s build keeps him from having much extension on his pitches, which leaves his curveball as a slow rolling 65 mph pitch. He also throws a change up. Blalock’s a competitive player who looks like he has some athleticism and we see a couple of prospects every year who are successful in dropping 20-30+ pounds and becoming a prospect. He swings the bat pretty well, too, which helps us recognize his athletic ability.
