2/3/12: Georgia Southern has had a storied baseball history, but only once before have the Eagles produced a first-round draft pick. That came in 1991, when righthander Joey Hamilton was taken by the San Diego Padres with the eighth overall pick. Hamilton went on to pitch 10 years in the big leagues, compiling a 74-73 record.
The school’s baseball image could take a quantum leap forward this spring as not one, but two Eagles are near-slam dunks to go in the first round of this year’s draft. In fact, both Beck and outfielder Victor Roache could seriously challenge Hamilton’s mark as the highest-previous pick in school history.
Though overshadowed in 2011 by the powerful hitting exploits of Roache, both in the spring at Georgia Southern and summer at Cotuit of the Cape Cod League, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Beck is considered to have the greater shot of being drafted ahead of his more-celebrated teammate. Only Stanford righthander Mark Appel, who is on the short list to be drafted first overall, is consistently ranked ahead of Beck among college pitchers on most draft boards.
Beck features three average to above-average major-league pitches in a 94-97 mph fastball, 80-83 mph slurve-like breaking ball and 84-mph straight change. He was consistently around the plate all last summer with his mix of pitches, while compiling a 2-3, 2.12 record with 13 walks and 41 strikeouts in 51 innings for Cotuit.
That performance came on the heels of a breakthrough sophomore season at Georgia Southern, where Beck went 9-5. 3.23 with 40 walks and 109 strikeouts in 103 innings—a sharp upgrade from a discouraging 2-4, 8.31 freshman campaign.
A 35th-round draft pick of the Cleveland Indians in 2009, Beck was part of the same Georgia Southern recruiting class that landed Roache, who topped the NCAA Division I ranks in homers in 2011 with 30—the largest total in eight years for a Division I slugger. As a freshman, Roache went deep only eight times.
Like Roache’s stunning breakout season, Beck’s success as a sophomore was equally unpredicted as he entered the 2011 season throwing only 90-93 mph and struggled to control his secondary stuff. Not only did he add 3-4 mph to his fastball, but he significantly sharpened the command of his slider and changeup. Overnight he jumped from a projected fifth-10th round pick in the 2012 draft to a candidate for the first round.
The crowning touch of his 2011 season came when tossed a complete-game shutout with nine strikeouts in the Southern Conference championship game. All he did in the Cape was solidify his stock as a first-rounder.
Beck does not have the loose, projectable frame generally desired in a first-round pitcher, but his arm is exceptionally strong and he has a clean, easy delivery that he repeats consistently. He made strides last summer in tightening up his control, though his command occasionally suffered a bit in the process as his pitches tended to clip a little too much of the strike zone.
With Beck and Roache as the star attractions, baseball scouts will flock to little Statesboro, Ga., this spring in numbers never seen before.
