Jeff Lyman is a big strong, good loking 6'3/215 rHP from Alamo, CA. Lyman has made some mechanical changes since we last saw him throw and he didn’t have the 92-93 mph heat he previously showed. But he’s a very strong young pitcher with a loose arm and a good curveball/change up combination who is very talented. His fastball is a very lively one and at 90 mph it seems to explode on hitters. The breaking ball is very deceptive but we expect him to develop a big power slider down the road. The change up is a weapon with great deception and real sharp movement. Jeff is one of the nations top hs pitchers and he should create lots of early draft interest. He was selected to the AFLAC All American Team.

Lyman was the hardest thrower at the event, touching 90 4 or 5 times and pitching steadily at 88-89 mph. At 6-3, 200 lbs, he’s strong and physically mature for his age but still has a young face and young features, so there is plenty of room for even more. Lyman’s delivery is very sound, with a nice body turn that helps him hide the ball and a quick, fluid arm stroke and a standard ¾’s release point. He’s very aggressive in the strike zone with both his fastball and a hard 74-75 mph curveball that has a tight slurve-type break. Lyman’s fastball can be a bit straight when it’s up but it’s a heavy pitch down in the strike zone. He also throws the slider and a splitty. Overall, he’s a very advanced pitcher for his age and should be one of the top pitching prospects in his class with normal development. There's no question that Jeff can and probably has thrown even better than what we saw in Arizona. He's for real and a top prospect for 2005.
