Jayson Hernandez is a 2006 catcher from Jackson, NJ with a medium build that shows strength at 5-10, 184 lbs. Like many shorter catchers, Hernandez has very quick actions on defense, especially on his transfers and releases. He has very good arm strength at 78 mph and had a best pop time of 1.82, with most of his pop times in that area. He shifts well behind the plate and isn't afraid to block the ball. Offensively, Hernandez hits from a narrow stance with good balance through the ball and a lofted swing plane. He does a good job keeping his hands back on breaking balls and using his quick hands. Hernandez tends to hit most balls in the air but he has the strength and bat speed to drive the ball. He is a good student who has signed with Winthrop.

Jayson Hernandez is a live bodied young 2006 catcher from New Jersey. We’re going to throw out his workout and most of his batting practice as a learning experience for a young prospect at a big showcase and focus mostly on what Hernandez did in the games when he was relaxed. Defensively, Hernandez impressed us with his footwork and quickness behind the plate. He takes charge of a game well, had soft hands and showed an enthusiasm and skill for blocking pitches. His arm strength is OK right now and is one area he can improve on defensively. Offensively, Hernandez hits from a wide stance with no load approach and keeps his hands inside the ball very well. He generates good bat speed and showed good power potential in batting practice and in a game when he hit a ball off the left field fence. Hernandez also pitched three innings, touching 80 mph with his fastball and showing a good mound presence and ability to throw strikes. Hernandez is a real good young catcher worth keeping a close eye on for the future.

Jayson Hernandez -- Hernandez is a 5-9 sophomore catcher from New Jersey who really opened our eyes with the bat. He has very good hand and upper body strength and excellent swing mechanics. Hernandez showed us the ability to turn hard on the ball and make it jump off his bat. This is a young prospect who you can just tell is going to keep hitting as he moves up. Hernandez’s defensive tools are not nearly advanced at this point as his bat and will need some work, but he shows the necessary raw ability and instincts. He's well above most "06" prospects in the country. Could end up at the very highest levels of college baseball.
