Jared Avchen is a 2006 catcher/third baseman from Palm Bay, FL with a thick strong build at 6-1, 200 lbs. He ran the 60 in 7.44 and showed excellent arm strength in drills at 80 mph. Avchen had a best pop time of 1.89 but doesn't rush his throws to second and makes strong, accurate throws. He showed very good game quickness behind the plate and can really jump on balls out in front of the plate. He's a first rate defensive catcher overall. Offensively, Avchen has a short, quick stroke and gets some extension out front that gives him some lift in his swing. It's a low maintanence swing that should result in consistent contact against all types of pitching if Avchen can stay short. Avchen showed us his power potential by hitting a game home run at Turner Field and this is an area of his game that could really develop as he gets more and more experience. Avchen is one of the more solid, well rounded catching prospects in the country. He is a very good student who has signed with Alabama.

Avchen is a strong and mature 6-0 junior catcher from Florida with a strong lower body and flexible upper half. He has excellent arm strength behind the plate and was 80 mph down to second in workouts with a low pop time of 1.87. His game throws were very accurate and his arm is a real weapon. As a hitter, one of the PG scouts summed up Avchen as follows "Like his bat speed. Do not like his approach". Avchen hits out of a very, very wide stance, as wide as any player we’ve recently seen. This precludes any weight transfer or movement through the ball. As noted, Avchen does create good bat speed because of his natural strength but there is much more there with some adjustments. He put some good swings on the ball in games and hit the ball hard to right centerfield. Overall, Avchen is a solid catching prospect for the next level and should keep improving. He is also an outstanding student.
