3/7/12: There are two-sport athletes in the 2012 high school baseball class who are considered better football prospects than Bishop Amat High School quarterback/third baseman Rio Ruiz. Fellow Perfect Game All-American Jameis Winston from Alabama and Anthony Alford from Mississippi would be the first two that come to mind. Each has signed a football scholarship to Florida State and Southern Mississippi, respectively, while Ruiz’s Southern California scholarship is for baseball.
Despite that, there may not be another top player in the country that has had to do more balancing between the two sports than Ruiz. That may be in the nature of being in the fish bowl of Southern California and going to one of the best known high schools in the region, or it just might be the result of Ruiz trying to go 100-percent in both sports.
During the last two Area Code Games, for instance, Ruiz has only made brief appearances due to conflicts with pre-season football practices. As one of the only sophomores at the 2010 event, Ruiz threw 93 off the mound on one day and went 2-for-3 with one of the hardest hit balls of the week on the other, whetting scout’s appetites but leaving them hungry for more.
The dual sport conflict reached a peak this fall and one couldn’t objectively do anything but feel sorry for Ruiz. He had a chance to play for the USA National 18U Team at the Junior Pan American Games in Columbia in September but that would force him to miss three football games. He decided to play baseball for his country instead of football for his high school and was flayed in the SoCal chat rooms and message boards. Then the Junior Pan Am Games baseball schedule was switched back to overlap with the football playoffs, forcing Ruiz to reconsider and stick with his fall football schedule.
Postscript: Ruiz completed 64-percent of his passes for 1,308 yards and 12 touchdowns last fall and threw only 4 interceptions. He also intercepted three passes while starting at safety. Bishop Amat finished with a 6-5 record after going 9-2 the previous season.
Ruiz is currently ranked 21st on the Perfect Game Class of 2012 rankings and one could envision his ranking higher, maybe much higher, if he had dedicated all his athletic attentions to baseball. That’s not an argument for only playing one sport, just a recognition that Ruiz’s physical tools in baseball are likely better than he has been able to show on a consistent basis.
The best way to understand Ruiz’s physical package is to compare him at the same age to another Southern California prospect, Eric Chavez. Chavez attended Mount Carmel High School in San Diego and was the 10th overall pick in the 1996 draft.
Ruiz has a strong balance between his left handed hitting ability, his power potential, his defensive athleticism and his arm strength, which he shows both defensively and on the mound. Chavez' profile was almost identical at the same point in his career.
Ruiz hit .435-3-35 as a high school junior, but to watch his swing and bat speed it’s easy to see far more power in his future. He has a loose, fast swing with ideal extension and lift at contact and the ball comes off the barrel very hard when squared up. Ruiz grades out as a slightly below average runner on the professional scouting scale, but will have plus range at third base because of his quick reflexes and athletic balance. His arm strength is in the plus/plus category at third, and if he pitched more frequently it wouldn’t be surprising if he wasn’t considered a top round pitching prospect as well. He threw only 11 innings as a junior but didn’t allow a run while striking out 18 hitters. He has been in the 91-93 range in short outings during showcases with a hard biting 75 mph curveball.
Going 10th overall like Chavez did is probably a big reach, but Ruiz’s physical tools certainly put him in the mix to be a first rounder come June.

Rio Ruiz is a 2012 3B/RHP, SS, OF with a 6-2 195 lb. frame from Covina, CA who attends Bishop Amat. Ruiz continued to solidify his standing as one of the elite players in the strong High School class of 2012. Ruiz oozes ability everywhere on the diamond, showing a plus arm from 3B, in the Outfield and with an impressive inning of work on the mound during the Top Prospect game. But what makes Ruiz special is his bat. With plus bat speed, quick hands, good bat whip and strength to all fields, he is one of the top power hitters in the country. With a powerful swing the highlight of the showcase may have come on Ruiz's final swing of BP, a towering shot that easily cleared the tall fence in RF and was obviously gone from the moment of impact. Defensive skills were also impressive, as in addition to the arm he is an aggressive defender at 3B who attacks the baseball and makes hard accurate throws, has skill set to be plus defender in RF as well. Elite level prospect. He is just as impressive on the mound easily pitching 88-91 mph with more in there and we have seen up to 93 before mulitple times. Verbal to USC. Named to Top Prospect Team.
