Derek Martinez is a 2009 RHP/IF with a 5'7'', 130 lb. frame from Palmdale, California, who attends Highland High School. Martinez is a young player with a trim and athletic frame. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a loose and clean arm action. Martinez has a good delivery with little effort. He has Pedro Martinez mannerisms on the mound. He gets sinking action on his fastball that topped out at 71 mph, while working in the 66-71 mph range. However, his arm works well showing projectable velocity. Martinez also mixes in a 61 mph curveball with 11/5 break. He throws strikes with both of his pitches. Martinez also has a quick move, and picked off runners in game action. He did not allow a hit in his 3 innings of work. At the plate he is a right handed hitter who hits from a straight away stance who hunches over at the waist. He is a line drive hitter who hits to all fields, and e stays on the curveball well. He is a good student as well.
