Jim Lyerly is a 2009 MIF/3B with a 5'11'', 155 lb. frame from Indian Trail, NC who attends Piedmont HS. He has a slender build with some strength projection. Lyerly's best tool was his bat. He has very strong hitting fundamentals and was able to create nice bat speed. He has a line drive swing plane and the ball came off his bat hard. The issue with Lyerly and that bat is just becoming more aggressive; he was very tentative getting the bat started and watched a lot of pitches that someone with his swing and ability should be attacking. The same thing was essentially true on defense; Lyerly has smooth third base actions and nice hands at the ball. He showed some arm strength but generally played back on his heels and was tentative making plays. He has all the physical tools to be a solid third baseman as he develops physically. Lyerly also pitched a bit and was 75-78 mph with his fastball with a good break on his slider.
