Matthew Barnes is a 2009 MIF with a 5'8'', 160 lb. frame from Alta Loma, CA who attends Los Osos HS. He has a small frame and a compact build that is suited for the middle infield. Barnes is a heady ballplayer who competes well and has some ability. Offensively he is a contact hitter with a pretty quick bat and and an aggressive swing. He employs a middle of the field approach and though he does have a bit of an arm dominated swing, his hands do work pretty well. Defensively Barnes moved aggressively to the ball, showing the awareness to close the distance and make a play on the ball. He has a solid release that works for an infielder and showed himself to be a solid 2nd baseman. Barnes physical development will have a lot to do with the level of college ball he can play at.

Matthew Barnes is a 2009 MIF/3B with a 5'7'', 160 lb. frame from Alta Loma CA, who attends Los Osos HS. He has a small frame with some strength for his size and age. Barnes hits from a square, balanced stance at the plate and has a late loading action. He has nice bat speed for a sophomore and did a good job handling the bat head and making solid contact. He has a good swing path and can shorten his swing to the ball. Barnes wasn't intimidated by the hard throwing older pitchers and lined a nice single to right field on a 90 mph fastball. His best contact was to right field. He has good hitting skills that should continue to develop. Defensively, Barnes played well in the games, showing good range in both directions and soft hands fielding the ball. He has a good release but is still developing his arm strength. He profiles best at second base at this point. Barnes has solid baseball skills and should continue to develop.
