Cory Nelson is a 2008 1B/P with a 6'2'', 220 lb. frame from Portsmouth, VA who attends Alliance Christian HS. He has a big body with some present strength and also some softness in the middle. Nelson has a big, long power hitter's swing with an upper cut swing plane and good raw power potential. He made his best contact to the middle of the field. Nelson's mind set may be a bit too much on contact and not on using his strength to drive the ball hard. Nelson is a 8.30 runner in the 60 and will have to work hard on his quickness and agility to play first base as the game speeds up. Nelson also pitched and was effective on the mound. He has an extended mid 3/4's release from a rotational delivery and hides the ball well from the hitters. His fastball topped out at 81 mph. He threw his curveball and change up from the same release point and threw strikes with all his pitches.
