2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
IF Cory Schmaltz: Schmaltz is a junior infielder from Iowa with very smooth infield actions and soft quick hands. Schmaltz has a quick first step as well and is going to be an excellent defensive second baseman at the next level. He has shown us a bit of arm strength by touching 80 mph off the mound and with his quick release, he might be able to play some shortstop as well at the right college program. Schmaltz’s bat has really improved this spring, too. He has a quick, wristy swing with a good level swing path that produces consistent solid line drive contact. Schmaltz ripped a triple up the right centerfield gap in one at bat during the showcase to demonstrate his ability to drive the ball with wood. One of our scouts called Schmaltz a "Throwback" player, meaning he plays the game hard with a minimum of flair and a maximum of fundamental skills. He's a player!
