Mathew a young sophomore catcher from Southern California. He has a wide frame with rounded shoulders and good present strength for his age. He'll have to work hard to keep a handle on his body as he gets older. Mathew has a simple strength approach at the plate, with limited weight transfer and a short swing that shows some bat speed through the ball. He looks like he can develop into a solid hitter. Defensively, Mathew showed soft hands on pitches in the zone, good fundamental foot work and a quick release. He will have to improve his raw arm strength to further develop as a catcher.
