2003 Sunshine West Showcase
One of the more powerful bats we saw in the Sunshine West showcase, Schaniel ripped the cover off the ball in BP. He caught our attention with the first swing in batting practice, knocking it out of the yard, just foul. He took the big bat into the games and showed that he is a good hitter who can mash the ball, mostly pulling it. Coming from a top High School program in California he showed some areas of maturity with a good eye at the plate and leadership behind the dish. He runs within catcher-accepted limits in the 60 and didn't let a ball hit the backstop. He does lack the soft receiving hands and presentation, but made adjustments to unfamiliar pitchers well. He threw with 71 mph velocity to second base but got his pop time as low as 2.09 by ulilizing good catch and throw mechanics. His bat will play at many Colleges and we imagine the ball will travel a long way off aluminum in his hands.
