Santana is a 6-2 right handed junior pitcher from the Miami area. He has a very nice projectable athletic body and smooth athletic actions. This young prospect doesn’t have the power stuff right now that he may have down the road but he can really pitch. His fastball is in the 80-83 mph range and it has occasional outstanding sinking and cutting action and Santana can put this pitch right on the corners at will. His 68 mph curveball has tight spin and good tilt to it and his 69 mph change up has nice potential. When Santana is mixing his pitches and varying the location and movement on his fastball, he’s really painting and overmatching hitters even without a power fastball. Because he’s projectable physically and athletic, Santana could very well be a late bloomer who ends up mixing his skills with top level raw stuff. Santana didn’t list a secondary position or participate in running or fielding drills but he took a first rate batting practice and showed a nice swing in game at bats. We don’t have a feel for him as a position player but he did look like a nice athlete with a variety of physical tools. Santana is also an outstanding student who should attract the attention of top academic programs.
