2006 California Underclass
Lane Stone is a 2007 OF/LHP from Huntington Beach, CA, with a 5'9" 150 lb. frame. Stone has an athletic build with some innate athleticism. A left handed hitter, Stone hits from a square stance and frankly he resembles Hideki Matsui (NY Yankees) in his set-up and approach to hitting, clearly he has modeled himself after Matsui. His bat has some length through the zone and some whip through the ball. Stone has good bat speed and a flat swing path. At times his swing can be quite lively. Generally he has good balance during his swing, evidenced by how his head stays still while he swings. His hips work early on front side, reminiscent of the style used by some of the Japanese players. He is a contact/spray type hitter with 4.48 speed home to first. In the outfield Stone showed good hands and a patient approach to the ball. Currently his arm strength is still developing and overall his defensive skills best translate to left field, at this time. On the mound Stone pitches from a 3/4 slot and his mechanics showed promise. He is an athlete on the mound with a three pitch mix. He approaches pitching like a hitter who knows how hitters should be approached. His slow CB can throw off timing, though so can his 72 mph FB. Stone should be followed as an outfield prospect at the small-medium D1 level; the bat looks like it has a chance to play at the college level.
