2004 Sunshine East Showcase
Craig Bate is a 6'4" left hander from Canada with a very good 2005 pitcher’s body and the chance to get even stronger in the future. He pitches from a tall, slow tempo, minimal effort delivery with a long, loose arm action and a high ¾’s release point. Bate topped out at 85 mph on his fastball with good lefty running action away from right handed hitters. We’ve heard of Bate throwing in the upper 80’s in the past and that’s not surprising at all after seeing him in Fort Myers. This is a young prospect who with his body and loose arm could easily be a 90 mph southpaw in the future. Bate’s curveball was 72-73 mph and was fairly flat considering his release point. This is a pitch that he can improve on in the future. He also threw a 72 mph change up. Bate threw four scoreless innings at the Showcase, striking out seven, including the side in his last inning of work. He needs to be followed very closely.
