Kirk Dehler is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Billings West HS, residing in Billings, MT. His body is an average athletic build on his 6'1" 180 lb. frame. Of note were his strong calves. Dehler ranked #73 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He fires from a high 3/4 slot and has good arm speed, with an arm stroke that has a two piece, somewhat stabbing arm action on the backside. It is an arm stroke that can create some leverage at release point when he is on time. For the most part his effort level was pretty average, suggesting that he has at least 3-5 more mph in there. Dehler showed decent command of all his pitches. He is a good athlete with good feet and a very nice pick-off move. His upper 80s fastball touched up to 90 and good arm side run and good down angle, coming from that leveraged arm stroke. His fastball is the type to get balls put in play on the ground. Dehler's 11/5 shaped 71 mph curveball had nice spin and rolling depth, able to roll below bats. His best secondary pitch was his 78 mph splitter. It had late dive and was thrown with very good arm speed. Not many young pitchers have good splitters, but his is advanced for this age group. There aren't generally too many prospects out of Montana, making Dehler's pro prospects a bit higher than if he were in a place like Southern California or South Florida. He looks to be a quality college arm but will generate some pro interest.
