Home plate umpire is horrible.

Yeah, some of those calls were so bad...a full foot wide of the plate. Yet the lavender geezer commented late, when a low pitch just on the electronic umpire's lower perimeter was called (correctly) a ball, "That's as big as the strike zone has been tonight, folks." Really? Guys get rung up on called thirds a foot away from the black, but you say the zone is too narrow for that cock-reliever because a pitch an inch lower than the strike zone is called a ball?

First off, give it up to Florida Beaver, who successfully picked three of the final four and nailed SCar 4-1 in the lower bracket.
25. . . Florida Beaver
14. . . MostUnknown
12. . . Rowdy
11. . . NolesFanJosh
8. . . ASU74
7. . . Dodger Matt
7. . . RiverDuck
7. . . SouthernBeaver
6. . . BeaverBob
Some bullets....
  • MostUnknown got two correct, absolutely picking FSU and Ark to go 2-2.
  • NolesFanJosh was the only other player to pick SCar to win the lower bracket.
  • Out of nine players and a possible 36 correct picks, only 6 were correct. FB got three of them MU 2, Rowdy 1, and NFJ 1.
  • Everybody else got exactly one of the two finalists on each bracket (but picked the wrong finish for that one).
For an experiment, this went okay. But I'll probably come up with something better for next year.

CWS historical perspective

Dodger Matt
Dodger Matt
I updated my CWS spreadsheet last night with this year's and last year's data. (I guess I was not that interested last year at the time and skipped it.) Anyway, before we get to the championship series, I thought I'd hit everyone with a few interesting factoids.

Arizona and South Carolina are pretty close in terms of CWS history, with an edge to the Wildcats.
School. . . . . .#1 . #2 . Apps. .G. . W. . L. . Pct . . .W/App . .L/App
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arizona . . . . . 3 . .3 . .16 . .63 . 36. .27 . 0.571 . .2.25. . .1.69
South Carolina. . 2 . .3 . .11 . .53 . 34. .19 . 0.642 . .3.09. . .1.73
That's numer of times finished #1 (champion), #2 (runner-up), appearances at the CWS, games, wins, losses, winning percentage, and wins and losses per appearance.

How to interpret: In terms of historical performance, Arizona gets the nod. This will be their seventh time in the title game/series compared to the Gamecocks' sixth, and they've been to the CWS five more times. SoCar has a better winning percentage and has played nearly as many games total despite those five fewer appearances, but I think that may have a bit to do with the increased number of games played in recent years since they've gone to a best of three championship series (and other changes to the format). SoCar gets about a win more per appearance (they are currently 4-1 this year compared to Arizona's 3-0), while the losses per appearance are even.

Arizona's last appearance in the CWS was 2004; their last appearance in the title game/series was 1986 (beat Florida State). Since that time, SoCar has been in the title game/series three times: Lost to Texas in 2002 (for the second time), and beat UCLA and Florida the last two years.

I've also applied weighted values to many of these stats, to get a feel for each team's relative place in CWS history. A team gets varying amounts of points for appearances, wins, and 1st and 2nd place finishes, then partial subtractions for losses and years since their last appearance in the CWS (penalizes teams that won in the "old days" but haven't been back in 30 years). Both of these teams appear in my top ten:

School. . . . . .#1 . #2 . Apps. .G. . W. . L. . Pct . . .W/App . .L/App
------------------------------------------------------------------------
USC . . . . . . .12 . .2 . .21 . 100 . 74 . 26 . 0.740 . .3.52. . .1.24
Texas . . . . . . 6 . .6 . .34 . 139 . 82 . 57 . 0.590 . .2.41. . .1.68
Arizona St. . . . 5 . .5 . .22 . .97 . 61 . 36 . 0.629 . .2.77. . .1.64
Miami (FL). . . . 4 . .2 . .23 . .85 . 47 . 38 . 0.553 . .2.04. . .1.65
LSU . . . . . . . 6 . .0 . .15 . .55 . 35 . 20 . 0.636 . .2.33. . .1.33
Arizona . . . . . 3 . .3 . .16 . .63 . 36 . 27 . 0.571 . .2.25. . .1.69
CS Fullerton . . .4 . .1 . .16 . .61 . 34 . 27 . 0.557 . .2.13. . .1.69
Stanford . . . . .2 . .3 . .17 . .69 . 40 . 29 . 0.580 . .2.35. . .1.71
Oklahoma St. . . .1 . .5 . .19 . .74 . 38 . 36 . 0.514 . .2.00. . .1.89
South Carolina . .2 . .3 . .11 . .53 . 34 . 19 . 0.642 . .3.09. . .1.73
South Carolina has jumped considerably over the last three years. I believe they were around 15th or 16th. They knocked Florida State, the only team in the top ten without a title, into 11th place.

More to come if anyone's still interested.

I glimpsed that headline a few hours ago and never went back to read it. What a maroon! plus the woman's husband has also filed suit against the kid claiming the loss of "services, society, and consortium" of his wife. I don't know what kind of services his wife provided, but they don't show a picture of her (before or after the ball-beating). If she looks as skanky as she has acted by suing an 11-year-old, maybe the loss of consortium is a GOOD thing.

Todd, you wouldn't happen to know collegebaseball10 on the Rivals board, would you?

Yes, nice writeup for you introduction to the PG forum. This day is dragging on for me waiting for this game one to start. And yesterday, nothing. I was so bored I did dishes and cleaned my work area. (I will have to reintroduce myself to my family in a couple of days. "Hi, I'm Matt, and I'm a college baseball-holic. Oh, and also a member of your family." Hi, Matt.

I hope Wade is on tonight. I see the Wildcats winning in two UNLESS Wade or Heyer is less than perfect. If either of their starts is a loss for Arizona, pack it in. Yes, the Wildcats have incredible bats, but SoCar's pitching looked pretty amazing to me. Then again, UNC's was touted when the faced the Beavers in two straight years, and OSU made that team look silly trying to defend small ball and ripping long balls, so maybe good hitting will beat good pitching this time. Who knows?

Let's let them play and see.

I know this is off topic, but this board is so neglected I feel we could mention almost anything here. And this is important to me, so I wanted to share.

My wife is away for the weekend. Tonight they are having a ceremony for the passing of a man who was part of my family, who was like an uncle to my kids, and who died Tuesday. Though many of you have never met me or this man, many of you may have seen him before. Anyway, I was not able to accompany my wife on this trip, but there was a moment in church this morning that got me choked up again. I'm just thinking of him dying alone a day after Father's Day, and it makes me sad. But he was a special guy.

Me? Garage beer (aka Rainer). But I can't wait for stuff like when the lavender geezer mentions a player; I'm taking a swig whenever the second hand reaches 12.

Okay, just to play fair, I'll officially claim both of Andy Lopez's bearded sons, neither of whom I've seen take the field or swing a bat for a single moment all year but who are both on the roster. When either is mentioned, I'll pluck a hair of the dog, and take a swig.

Ha! I love the "report" smiley. Have to remember that one.

Some websites don't like you using certain common insults. Some folks who like to insult others (okay, I include myself among them) have learned to use homonyms or "slant rhymes" for common insults to avoid the insult filters. Hence terms like maroon, muddyforker, demonrat, ducksocker, etc.
