That Danny Hayes homer was sweet. You could tell as soon as it left his bat.

Nick Rulli, pinch hit RBI double in the Civil War.

Nick who? That was his third atbat as a Beaver. His first hit. Against Thomas Thorpe in the Civil War.

Nice baptism.

Dan Child, tomorrow's starter for the Beavs, comes in with a runner on second and one out to face pinch hitter Thomas Walker. Hmm.

That was an awesome 7-2 double-play to end it. The camera angle on Conforto grabbing that line drive looked like he was fielding it off the grass, but it was a shoestring catch, and he threw a strike to Gorton for the putout at the plate.

There was evidently some emotional back-n-forth after that. Sounded like Parker was yelling, "Don't let them do that on our field!" and "If they want to fight, I'll take our guy over theirs any day!" He cracks me up sometime.

"There might be some distortion on this final play because it got a little loud and exciting in the press box...."

What an understatement. "...And he is...OUT AT THE PLATE!!!!"

Parker hasn't said much about the apparent scuffle after the game or the fact that Horton and Casey didn't shake hands. Wondering about that last one.

Yeah, I would hope it was only something like that and not any animosity over the game between coaches.

So Gorton spiked the ball after tagging Altobelli out, and that triggered Alto. Okay, you don't typically see that kind of football thing in baseball, but it was a bang-bang dam good play to end the game, and I don't blame Gorton for doing it, nor would I accuse him of doing that, in the heat of the moment, as an act of aggression or taunting. I saw lot of celebration around the plate after that play, not any taunting directed at the Ducks.

Emotions run high.

Rats. I forgot this forum SW doesn't display images wider than a few inches,
and if you link to one, the edit and delete links are too far to the right to do
anything to fix it.

I'm watching that game right now, and Oregon was up 10-3 in the last inning. Their pitcher has given up three solo homers, and it's now 10-6. Two outs.

Arizona State and Oregon lose their first game in the super regionals, then take the next two to advance to the WCWS. Arizona gets knocked out 0-2 by Oklahoma.
Cal and Washington are playing each other now.

Day two

We now have a three-way tie for 1st, and with ASU one game back, we could end up with a four-way tie if Oregon, Arizona, and UCLA all lose tomorrow. Stanford is officially out of the running.

  • Oregon State 3, Oregon 2. For the second day in a row, the Beavers overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat in-state rival Oregon 3-2. OSU’s Jace Fry was not as sharp as his counterpart Jake Reed, but both left the field in the 7th inning with a 2-2 tie. Redshirt sophomore Nick Rulli, in his third atbat as a Beaver, got his first hit--an RBI double that scored the winning run and tagged Reed with the loss. But the game’s most dramatic play is the one that ended it. With one out and JJ Altobelli on third, Aaron Payne hit a line drive to left field. Michael Conforto caught the ball at his feet and fired a one-hop strike to catcher Ryan Gorton, who tagged Altobelli out for a game-ending 7-2 double-play. Dylan Davis pitched to one batter, inducing a groundout, and earned the win. Tomorrow’s scheduled starter, Dan Child, pitched 1.2 IP for his first save. Aaron Jones was 3 for 4 for the Ducks. Reigning Pac-12 player of the week Danny Hayes was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs on a 2-run homer in the 6th that tied the game.
    OSU leads series 2-0.
  • ASU 9, Arizona 7. RHP Trevor Williams pitched eight innings in a 9-7 win before 5,677 fans at Hi-Corbett Field in Tucson. Williams is the Pac-12’s only 12-game winner this season. Arizona’s Konner Wade lasted only three innings and surrendered 7 hits and 7 runs (6 earned). Down 7-2, the Wildcats came as close as 8-5 after six innings. They also scored two in the bottom of the 9th, but came up short. Andrew Aplin went 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs on a 3-run homer and three runs scored, Deven Marrero had 3 hits and an RBI, and Joey DeMichele had 2 RBIs. Trent Gilbert was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs for the Cats.
    Series tied 1-1.
  • UCLA 6, USC 5. Trailing 4-0 after five innings, UCLA scored 5 over the next two frames to take a 5-4 lead heading into the 9th inning. The Trojans tied it with a couple of singles. In the bottom of the 9th, UCLA loaded the bases with a Cody Keefer double, an IBB, and a single. Then, with two outs, USC’s Martin Viramontes walked Cody Regis on four pitches to “drive in” the winning run. Cody Keefer was 4 for 5 with 1 RBI and 2 runs.
    UCLA leads series 2-0.
  • Cal 15, Stanford 5. Stanford implodes. A few short hours after losing an 18-inning heartbreaker to their archrivals, the Cardinal give up 17 hits and 15 runs to the Golden Bears in an embarrassing display that would make a reasonable selection committee member wonder which team would show up to a regional in Stanford’s unis. With Tony Renda playing short, 2B Derek Campbell had a great day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.
    Cal leads series 2-0.
  • Washington 5, Washington State 2. Ty Afenir was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI for the Dawgs. Collin Slaybaugh was 3 for 4 and drove in both of Wazzu’s runs.
    Washington leads series 2-0.
  • Game one. UC Santa Barbara 6, Utah 2. Utah’s Joe Pond (3-10) added to his leading worst number of losses.
  • Game two. Cal State Bakersfield 7, Utah 5. The inutile Utes surrendered four runs in the 1st en route to being swept in three (of their four) games in Bakersfield. Starting pitcher Ben Mordini (0-5) lasted only 1.0 IP, giving up all four earned runs. Utah scored 3 in the 7th and 2 in the 9th, and outhit the Roadrunners 10-6, but that’s all she wrote. See ya next year, Utah.
    Utah is swept 0-3.
Standings
     Ariz 19-10
    Ore 19-10

I pick with my mind and root with my heart.
With the Civil War series going the way it is, I'm wondering if your heart is kicking your mind in its butt.

Two questions.. was not at game.. how close was the play at the plate, the catch, and the throw out at third in the first game..

I was at the first game, and the play at third was close. Didn't see a good replay, but my guess was he was safe.

The play at the plate yesterday: Check out the picture I linked to on the Civil War thread. Like Duck Jerry said, it "could have gone either way" because Gorton had the ball in his mitt a mere three or four feet in front of the plate when Alto crashed into him. It was a matter of inches...probably between 30 and 50 inches....

Several photos here.

Here's the YouTube link to that game-ending double-play.

I love that little victory skip Gorton did before spiking the baseball.
This is going to be one of my favorite video clips for some time.

Warren was safe on that pick at first. He was leaning the opposite way and would have been nailed had the throw been lower and closer to the bag, but it was up and away, and Keyes's tag was late. But the ump called him out. Incorrectly.

Don't think it will play that big against the Ducks.

Arizona was cruising to a share of the title, 7-1 over ASU. Now it's 7-4 in the 5th.
UCLA just evened USC 2-2 in the 2nd.

Lost a post here somehow. Confused

Oh well. Conforto hits a double for RBI #71 and the Beavers lead 2-0.

I'm really starting to like Gorton behind the dish. He's looking and playing more and more like Mitch Canham. I know he came in as a pitcher/outfielder, and moved to catcher with the Corvallis Knights. He has grown into the position.

Duck interference on the sac bunt, so the runner is out, and the guy on first has to go back to first.
