Bob, since you seem to be interested in Canadian wildlife, I thought you might appreciate this video on spiders that the Canadian Wildlife Service put out.

I think I saw a sign near Lincoln City pointing to Crack Spider Beach a couple years ago.

I work during the day and rarely get an opportunity to participate in these chats live, but I check them out post facto. So answer this, if anyone knows: Why are 90% of the questions on the weekly chats from SEC/ACC fans, yet in the comments on this forum, you hardly see any of these guys? Do they know this forum exists?

My week for making mistakes

One payer called to ask about a discrepancy in his score, and when I checked the scores I noticed that I had scored the Wazzu-Cal series 2-1 Wazzu instead of 2-1 Cal. So here are the updated scores. Apologies once again.

Week 12 scores

Borg makes it to the top of the list for the first time this season. If the Ducks had lost today’s game, he and I would have swapped scores.

I was wondering if the Beavs would throw Taylor Starr again. He didn't pitch over the weekend against the Card, and he seemed to do okay last time he faced the Ducks.

Heh-heh.

Send Bryant out there. He needs the work. Brocker did his thing, but he also comes out the following inning and explodes. Bryant.

Okay, it's Bryant. I still can't understand pitching Boyd for ONE BATTER. This is a pattern. And it makes no sense to me.

But it's all moot right now. We're still behind. Depends on the heart of the Beaver order in the 9th. If Bryant doesn't crash and burn here now.

Now Bryant?

Is there a rhyme or reason to the pitching changes?

Or is it just a change by dart throw?

Ahem. Would you have preferred Brocker?

Conforto, Dunn, Gorton. Our 3-4-5 hitters. This is the test right here. Would love to see Conforto break out of his slump with a swat.

Yup. I was "entertaining" a client of my wife's, unexpectedly, and could not listen or sit in front of the computer until an inning ago, and I'm glad I got to hear this much.

Conforto down.

Yes, but still not bad. Starr's poor first inning notwithstanding, our pitching was very good tonight. And we had the tying RISP. Better than a 7-1 spanking.

It sets the stage for a great Corvallis Civil War showdown.

Pac-12 Predictions: Week 13

Week 13

This looks to be a down week, as none of the series pits top teams against each other. But there is still some intrigue as a couple of teams with reasonable hopes of making the postseason host upper-tier teams in gotta-win series, and a couple of other teams whose postseason hopes are all but gone travel to other strong teams’ ballparks for a last-ditch, against-all-odds effort to play into June.
  • UCLA at UW
  • Ariz at Cal
  • USC at Ore
  • WSU at Stan
  • OSU at Utah
  • ASU at Gonzaga (XGon)
Week 13 Series
  • The Huskies are practically in after playing very well in Coach Lindsey Meggs’s third season at UW. According to the RPI needs report, UW only needs to go 4-6 to make the cut. With series against UCLA, @ASU, and Wazzu, this seems doable. UCLA was one out away (several times) from a sweep of Purdue before succumbing to an outlandish 10-run 9th-inning loss, but the Bruins still enter the weekend in the discussion for a national seed. That may end prematurely if they don’t take care of the Huskies.
  • Arizona is still in the hunt for the Pac-12 crown, even after losing a home series to 1st place Oregon last weekend. They travel to California to take on the Golden Bears, who amazingly can still make the postseason if they win seven of their last ten games. Easier said than done. Those ten games are Arizona, UCLA, and @Stanford, with a single nonconference game against Wazzu.
  • USC suffered a devastating blow getting swept by Washington last week, but they can still get in with an 8-4 record over their last 12 games. They also face a gauntlet of top-tier Pac teams: @Oregon, Arizona, and @UCLA, with a makeup game against Wazzu, and solos against Santa Barbara and Riverside. The Ducks has proven themselves the best team in the conference, with a 1.5-game lead over 2nd place Arizona and series wins over the other top four teams. They have only USC at home and Oregon State on the road left in conference play. Doing well against the Trojans might render the Civil War series irrelevant to the conference title. But if they let Arizona or UCLA gain ground by not taking the Trojans seriously, they could lose it all on the diamond in Corvallis. Which would be a terrible thing.
  • The Cougars have to go 10-2 to have a chance now. They might not make it past this weekend at Sunken Diamond. If they manage to pull off an upset in Palo Alto, they still have OSU and @UW. Too many wasted opportunities. Stanford is still trying to claw back into the top of the conference standings. Their remaining schedule looks favorable: Wazzu, @Utah, and Cal.
  • The wipeout classic has the inutile Utes hosting Oregon State. Nuff said.
  • This week’s nonconference series should be a good one. Although tied for 5th in the WCC, Gonzaga has a decent overall record (29-17, same as ASU) and some good wins on their resume and still could make the postseason with a 5-5 finish. They lost two 1-run games to Oregon last week, but they also have beaten UW and Wazzu each twice this year. ASU is playing for pride, but the Zags are playing for spot in a regional.

All right, I know a lot of folks don't use the Ariz abbreviation, and that one is understandable. But the first three of your picks I have to manually retype. WA, AZ, and OR are good if you work for the post office, but c'mon.

(At least you got the important ones right.)

Pac-12-related excerpts from Aaron Fitt's chat:

Dave (Eugene, OR): How likely is it for Oregon State to host a Regional? Their series wins over Stanford and UCLA are impressive, but their loss to USC last week really hurt.

    Aaron Fitt:
You're right — the Stanford and UCLA series wins put Oregon State in the discussion, but the USC series loss and getting swept at Arizona State do hurt. The problem is, due to a combination of conference standings and RPI, Oregon State is clearly behind four other teams in the Pac-12 (Oregon, UCLA, Arizona, Stanford). I don't see the Pac-12 getting five hosts (remember Fullerton as a likely fifth Western host), so the Beavers need to finish stronger than Stanford, and I think Stanford's remaining schedule is a bit more favorable.

    Dougner (Albuquerque):
Hey Aaron, Cal State Fullerton was pretty impressive against Pacific, but I know the going will get much tougher come June. It seems the pitching staff is coming together with a fairly typical CSF(small ball) offense. What do you think of the Titans chances of making a deep run in the tournament?

    Aaron Fitt:
These Titans feel a lot like Oregon to me — they really don't dazzle you, but they're both darn good baseball teams that play very hard and know how to win. There's a lot to be said for that — those are the kind of characteristics that carried Oregon State and South Carolina to titles in recent years, though I don't think Fullerton and Oregon are as good as those Beavers and Gamecocks teams. Just making the point that scrappy, mentally tough teams have a way of overachieving relative to their talent levels.

    Kevin (Eugene, Oregon):
What are the chances for Oregon to get a National seed?

    Aaron Fitt:
    Very strong.
Too bad that Duck fan didn't ask a more detailed question, like, "With series remaining against USC, Seattle, and Oregon State, what do my Ducklings have to do to snag a national seed? If the Mighty Beavers sweep the Ducks in the Civil War in Corvallis, should I just go back to my garage and smoke a bowl? Or would Oregon still have a chance at, um.... Uh, I forgot what I was going to ask...."

Week 13 pick analysis

Oregon State and Utah open this weekend's play tomorrow at 11am, so anyone not already on board is likely to miss first pitch. Here's the pick analysis. Three teams were unanimous picks:
  • Stanford (11/0, 10 sweeps) over Wazzu.
  • Oregon (11/0, 8 sweeps) over USC.
  • Oregon State (11/0, 7 sweeps) over Utah.
  • Arizona is a close 4th: 10/1 over Cal, with 2 sweeps.
  • The only close series should be the one in Spokane: ASU 6/5 over Gonzaga, with each team getting 1 sweep.

One of the earliest games ever played in a Pac-12 series, to my impaired memory. Beavers face Brock Duke, the older brother of injured Oregon State pitcher Adam Duke. Brock is also married to a gal on the Utah softball team, an apparent high school sweetheart.

And Conforto goes yard in the thin air. Two more RBIs added to his recently sparse total.
