Wetzler outpitched Appel. Both faced 31 batters over 7.0 IP. Wetzler allowed 2 runs (thanks to poor bullpen relief) on 7 hits and struck out 5. Appel allowed 2 runs on 9 hits and struck 4. It's a shame to think that the Wetzler and the Beavers could have won this game if Yeskie had brought in Scott Schultz instead of Gorton and left Matt Boyd in there longer and brought in Bryant for the 9th. I was not sure Benny was going to go as far as he did, after showing the control problems early, but this was a game he should have had in his W column.

Tomorrow is the big game. I want Fry to go as long as possible because I just don't trust the pitching coach's decisions in late close games. We need the win tomorrow because Sunday's game is not going to be easy and today's loss hurts.

Mooneyham is sick. JR RHP Dean McArdle, from Sioux City, Iowa, starts for the Cardinal today. McArdle has numbers similar to Mooneyham's: 3-1 record, 4.06 ERA, .298 OBA. In conference games only, McArdle has done much better than Mooneyham: 1-0 vs. 1-4 record, 2.35 vs. 5.39 ERA, 2.50 vs. 2.87 OBA. But those 6 games were all relief appearances (7.2 IP) compared to Mooneyham's 6 starts (34.0 IP). McArdle has two starts this season, but none in conference.

My take: McArdle should do well the first two times through the Beaver lineup. Things might get interesting around inning 6 or 7.

The rumor abut Casey retiring and Lees taking over next year has popped up several times. When he does retire, I’d rather see someone like Scott Brosius who is currently coaching at Linfield come in. What better recruiting draw than a coach who played for the Yankees, won a World Series Championship, and was also the MVP in the World Series. He has also been very successful in his 5 years at Linfield College.

Brosius hasn't done as well at Sinfield as the former head coach at George Fox did. That guy only managed to win a national championship at GFU. Plus he has been recognized by his coaching peers as an exemplary coach with high standards in "sportsmanship, integrity, character, and ethics."

Nothing against Brosius, but when Pat Casey calls it quits, Oregon State would do better hiring this guy as head coach, IMHO.

Ryan Barnes leads off with a 2-0 homer to left field. Maybe I spoke too soon about McArdle gioing 6 innings.

McArdle gone already after 2.0 IP. I don't think he was doing badly, the leadoff homer notwithstanding. But I guess Marquess's strategy today is to throw a bunch of relievers all day.

Garrett Hughes at 6-8 is a full foot taller than the first batter he faces, John Tommasini, at 5-8.

Hughes is near the top of Stanford's ERA chart, at 2.30, and he has a Stanford-best OBA of .190 over 15.2 IP.

UCLA strikes first in game one against Purdue on Trevor Brown's solo homer. UCLA 1-0 after 4 innings. Plutko has kept the Boilermakers hitless, having retired all 13 batters he has faced so far.

Well, it is not a bad strategy. It just hasn't worked.

McArdle and Hughes will see their ERAs go up after today.

Plutko retired the first 16 Boilermakers he faced before giving up a single to David Miller in the 6th to break up the perfect no-hitter.

After 7 IP, I believe Fry is at 82 pitches. If he stays out of trouble the last two innings, he can go the full game and stay under 100 pitches.

Stanford is sticking with the 2 innings per reliever strategy, even though Schmidt, although he almost allowed a run in his first inning, had kept the Beavers off the board in his two. Elliott Byers is the Cardinal's fourth pitcher of the day. His pitching appearances are not significant enough to provide meaningful numbers: 2.1 IP, 15.43 ERA.

Marquess is throwing all of his little-used arms now. Next: Sam Lindquist and Brian Busick, maybe Sahil Bloom.

Plutko leaves the game in the 9th after hitting a batter and giving up a one-out single, the second hit and third runner he allowed all day. Bruins up 5-0.

The Boilermakers spoil Plutko's shutout, scoring one on what looked like it should have been a game-ending double-play, but the Bruins win 5-1.

Fry gets out of an 8th-inning jam with a runner on third with one out, and preserves the shutout through 8 innings. I believe his pitch count is 100.

After yesterday's explosion when they took Wetzler out, their plan today--no relief pitching--is a good one. Fry loses the shutout but gets the complete game win, 4-2.

Washington beat USC 6-3 and outhit the Trojans 19-6!

In the second inning of game two of their double-header with UCLA, Purdue has already matched their total in hits (2) and runs (1) from the first game. Purdue up 1-0, top of the 2nd.

UCLA sweeps the doubleheader, beating Purdue 3-2. I forgot to mention earlier (forgot about it myself) that the UCLA games can be heard online by checking their website's "Schedule" page. I'll try to remember to post the link tomorrow.

Boilermakers outhit the Bruins 10-4 in the nightcap.

ASU has more runs than hits so far, 14 and 13 respectively. And Utah has one more run than errors, 4 and 3.
