RBI leaders

This is not solely Pac-12-related content, but it's better than starting a new topic that nobody will comment on. I grabbed the stats from the top eleven national leaders in RBIs and RBIs per game as of this morning, and there has been a change in both categories' leaders.

The kid with the fabulous yesteryear baseball name of Goose Kallunki hit about 8 ribbies over the last couple games to jump from third in both categories to the top in both. Granted, he is playing in the Great West Conference against competition like New Jersey Tech, Chicago State, and North Dakota, but UVU also has wins over Arizona and Arizona State. Plus he has 59 RBIs! Doesn't matter the competition--the kid can hit.

So here are the top ten as of this morning. Two Pac-12 guys on the list, as Stanford's Stephen Piscotty jumped in since last week.

Kinda funny seeing that San Diego catcher wearing sunglasses behind his catcher's mask.

Yeah, not bad, eh? And being able to watch them, I understand now why Portland has such a good team ERA. Their R-L ace-deuce pitchers are pretty darn good. Just like another purple-clad PNW team from a few years back (Lincecum at Washington), it would be a shame if Portland didn't make the postseason this year. Even as a 3-seed, I think they could cause some problems for the favored teams.

Finally Parker refers to Dante Flores as Flores instead of Kevin Swick.

Actually, I can't tell who Swick or Flores is supposed to be. He now refers to Aguirre as Swick. Huh?

Whether or not they make the postseason is still up in the air. What I'm saying is, with the one-two punch they have, they could cause problems if they do get in. The Ducks did not face either of those pitchers.

I am getting tired of USC's embarrassing facilities and infrastructure. An institution with their prestige and history should invest a few coins and upgrade Dedeaux Field. Every five minutes the broadcast line breaks, or the GameTracker stats die for six innings. I understand nobody but a few hundred fans ever go there to watch the games, but you're USC. Sheesh.

And Our 1-2 punch is not proven?

Huh? Here, let me paraphrase this conversation. Tell me where you misunderstood....
DM: Portland's pretty good this year. If they get into the postseason, they could cause some problems for higher seeds.

RD: You think they're good? Our freshman no-hit them, then Oregon State destroyed our freshman. You call that good?

DM: You didn't face Portland's ace or deuce. A one- or two-seed in the postseason would. And that's what I'm talking about.

RD: What about Oregon's ace and deuce, huh?

DM: What do Oregon's starters have to do with this discussion? I did not say Portland would face Oregon in the postseason and shut them down.

[Future comments, not yet made but soon should be.]

RD: Oh, I get it! I'm sorry. Forgive me for thinking only about my team and incorrectly assuming that everything somebody says about another team is somehow a slam on my Ducks. I understand now that you were only offering a third party's objective appreciation for another team and that your comments didn't have any correlation to my Ducks. I wish I could say I won't make this mistake again, but that might not be the case. But for now please accept my humble apology for steering this conversation away from the Pilots.

    DM (magnanimously): No problem.

RD: So tell me: Why DO you think Oregon's Friday and Saturday starters are not proven?

Week 11 scores

For the second week in a row, WildCard gets top score. Congrats to WildCard! The two runners-up, with identical picks, were the ones to get five series correct, only missing the Oregon sweep. And finally, I never found out who that mysterious "Guest" was who picked using the quick reply link. That person is now known as "z6" in my database until I get a name....

DOUBLE OUTCH!! DM, can you run a needs analysis to see what I need to do to finish in the top half

Yes, very simply, watch what FullertonBaseballFan does.

Actually, and this may be instructive to the others at the bottom, look at your cumulative score and FBF's. Since you both have competed all seven weeks so far and likely will participate in the remaining four weeks, it's easy to compare apples to apples and see that you are about 20 points behind him. If you can gain 5 points on him each week, you should equal his score by season's end. That's not going to be easy, but it is still doable. (Window is shrinking.) Notice that this week there were 9 points separating you. So if FBF has two terrible weeks and you have two great ones, you could get there by Week 13.

For everyone else, it would be a little less drastic, so the point is, everyone still has a chance. But you need to start gaining some points. Start picking some sweeps, for example. (Caution: This backfired on me this week.)

I was watching most of the game from my computer; I didn't see you. Maybe you should have worn orange...been orange.

Etzel Field looks pretty nice, doesn't it?

BTW, that pitch did NOT hit the batter, which was to Portland's detriment, as the runner on third should have scored on the wild pitch but didn't because it was a dead ball and the next batter popped out. Too bad Rich Hill got bent on that play cuz the umps saved him a run by getting the call wrong.

Be careful what you wish for....

Here's what I have been thinking. I don't know what Oregon's all-time record is against Portland, but Oregon State's is a huge win advantage. A big part of that lies in the fact that the two teams never in the "modern era" of the last ten years or so play each other for three-game weekend series. We play a couple times each year nowadays in midweek games, facing those fourth or fifth starters. That is to OSU's (and Oregon's) advantage because Portland's roster will not often be as deep.

But in a weekend series? Or in a regional where you might only have to beat the other team twice? The odds even a little bit for Portland. Especially this year.

That's not likely to happen any time soon, unless some of the D3 programs here suddenly become D1 overnight. We are so spread out in the PNW that we need Portland and Gonzaga for midweek games. That's why OSU and Oregon play a couple of midweek nonconference games too. And UW played Oregon a couple extra times last year, I think. If Colorado adds baseball or the Pac adds four more teams (Texas and Oklahoma schools) and our conference schedule expands, we'll still need midweek games that don't require a lot of traveling. Look at Portland and Wazzu this week playing in Pasco. That's a midweek game between "geographically close" teams, but they're splitting the travel distance.

As for facing Portland or Gonzaga in the postseason, yep. If either or both teams make it, and if Oregon and/or OSU hosts, expect to see those WCC teams in Eugene or Corvallis.

Okay, two apologies. Yes, RD, I had your votes logged, but I hadn't inserted the formula to compute your scores, so they didn't appear in the weekly column. You finished with the same score as Florida Beaver, 20 pts. So your overall average improved.

Rowdy, I checked back to Week 8 (fortunately it's still there). Your picks were surrounded by a lot of chatter and I must have missed them at the time. But I've added them. Props to you for asking. You ended up with 16 points, which was nearly the low for that week, and it has dropped your average a bit.

No change in the order of participants on the season average scale, but here are the updated scores.

Well, at the award banquet, we could all meet up at the Peacock- Heck it is only 45 minutes from my house. FB- you would have at least a 5 day one way drive, but hey- it's worth it. I would invite Yeskie, then he would have to drive us all home.. He would have to be sober though.. FB- That would suck to be driven home by Yeskie. Five days in a car.. you could probably make a movie out of it. LOL

That's some funny s#!t right there. Yeskie's designated driver service. Maybe Horton could meet us at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Currently ISR 58, RPI 86, and needing to go 11-2 according to Boyd's needs report to make the cutoff. Seems a tough wall to climb. They have six games against St. Mary and Seattle, which should not be that hard. But the other seven are @Gonzaga (3), @Oregon State, Oregon (1 home, 1 away), and against Wazzu (in Pasco). I think their best chance is to win five of their remaining six conference games and hope the three teams above them beat each other up. Not a great strategy, but pretty much all they have left.

Can anyone tell why these schools played (or will play) split home/away 3-game series this year? Does it have anything to do with the Aggies leaving the Big XII and this being their final year to play these teams as conference foes?
