My picks. Nothing outlandish.

OSU 3-0
ASU 2-1
Cal 2-1
Ariz 3-0
USC 2-1

I'm thinking now for the Beavs to get that national seed, they have to sweep, and UCLA has to take two from ASU. Don't think that'll happen, and I don't think enough of the ACC teams that are fighting for the 8th national seed will falter in their tournament. So it'll be a regional host for us unless the committee totally disregards the Rat's Patootie and looks at our series wins and overall resume.

I'll post pick analysis later...waiting to see if we get another vote or two.

BTW, there is SO MUCH Civil War newscopy to read this week, it's awesome. I just found out Susac is a metalhead, and that makes him all the cooler to me.

Go Zags. I think they would represent the WCC better than USF. Problem is they'll probably end up in Corvallis. Oh well, we all gotta go sometime.

Pick analysis:
  • This week's overwhelming favorite: Arizona over the Hapless Huskies, 17/0 with 10 sweeps.
  • The next four are pretty close:
    • USC 14/3 over Wazzu (4 sweeps).
    • OSU 13/4 over Oregon (6 sweeps).
    • Cal 13/4 over Stanford (1 sweep).
    • ASU 13/4 over UCLA (1 sweep).
  • All home teams are favored except Oregon State, which will have plenty of Beaver fans in attendance anyway.
I've already run the possible outcomes and it comes down to a two-horse race for the Predictor of the Year crown.
Both people have a chance to end the year with an average over 18, which is impressive.

Nice way to make an entrance. What's an 8 clap? Sounds venereal.

BTW, Beaver fans who dislike the Ducks' game tracker: You can still view the game using the real GameTracker.

How can Susac take strike three so often? I mean, if it's close, I'd rather have my best slugger swinging at it rather than hope the ump says it missed and get a walk.

Day one

Oregon 4, Oregon State 1: Danny Pulfer led off with a double for the Ducks in the bottom of the 1st, advanced on a sac bunt, and scored on a sac fly to give Oregon a 1-0 lead. The Ducks scored an unearned run in the 3rd on two infield singles and an error. The Beavers got one back in the 7th on a Ryan Dunn single followed by Parker Berberet’s double. But KC Serna lined a 2-run homer over the left field fence in the corner in the bottom half to give Oregon a 4-1 lead. That was just Gaviglio’s second homer allowed all season. Tyler Anderson pitched 7.2 innings with 10 Ks, 2 BB, and one run to improve to 8-3. Gaviglio (6.2 IP, 6 Ks, 2 BB) dropped to 11-2.

Oregon leads series 1-0.

UCLA 10, ASU 3: With three straight singles to start the game, the Bruins jumped to a 2-0 lead in the 1st. The Devils got one back in the 2nd on Zach Wilson’s leadoff homer, tied it in the 4th on doubles by Joey DeMichele and Matt Newman, then took a 3-2 lead in the 5th. But the Bruins exploded for 5 runs in the 6th, with the first five batters reaching base safely before ASU recorded an out. UCLA added two in the 8th to take a 9-3 lead, then tacked on an unearned run in the 9th for the final score. Gerrit Cole went 8 IP, with 9 SO, 4 BB, 9 hits, and 3 runs (all earned). Pat Valaika and Cody Regis had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Brady Rogers (8-4) went 6 IP, with 9 Ks and no walks in the loss, yielding 7 runs (only 3 earned). The game was not particularly clean in terms of defense, with UCLA committing 3 errors and ASU 4. With the win, UCLA jumps ahead of ASU in the standings and are now tied with Oregon State--who lost the first Civil War game--for 1st.

UCLA leads series 1-0.

Stanford 3, California 2: Mark Appel (5-6) pitched into the eighth and Chris Reed shut the door on the final five outs for his seventh save. Erik Johnson (6-3) went the first seven innings, tying his career high with 11 strikeouts, but allowing two of his four walks to score and leaving with a 3-2 deficit. Cal, led by Marcus Semien, who went 3 for 4, outhit Stanford 9-5. Tyler Gaffney went 2 for 4 with one RBI for the Cardinal. The teams will play a double-header tomorrow.

Stanford leads series 1-0.

Arizona 9, Washington 0: Kurt Heyer pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 5 and walking none to win game one. UW got seven hits against Heyer but couldn’t string them together to scratch a single run. The Wildcats, on the other hand, were able to cash in their 11 hits and 5 free passes (4W 1 HBP). Robert Refsnyder led the Cats going 2 for 2 with 3 RBIs. Chase Anselment went 3 for 3 for UW.

Arizona leads series 1-0.

USC 6, Washington State 2: Andrew Triggs (5-4) struck out a career-high 13 over 7.2 innings, and surrendered 8 hits and one earned run. Adam Conley lost in his last game as a Cougar. Kevin Roundtree led the Trojans, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Ricky Oropesa clubbed his seventh homer of the season, adding two RBIs . Derek Jones led the Cougs, going 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.

USC leads series 1-0.

Well, they played well, but they also got some breaks. And Casey did not score when he should have. With Susac on third with one out, he should have had Keyes safety squeeze. I know he's got a hot bat, and he did put a zing on the ball, but those are the odds. They needed that run. A 3-2 walk followed by a line drive home run that barely cleared the foul pole? That's lucky. And those errors in the 3rd that led to that unearned run. It was winnable.

Credit the Ducks, cuz they did outplay us. But we only need to win the next two. I don't think UCLA will sweep, but I feel a little easier (even with our loss) that they took the first game from ASU.

The ACC is a complete and utter joke

What else can you expect when the tournament, itself, has been reduced to little more than a post-season exhibition tournament sandwiched in between the parts of the season that really mean something? Two pools and a single-elimination "championship" game...and to think that they call the winner of it the "Conference Champion."

Frankly, it's an insult to the regular season champion, even though the regular season has been marred by the conference's ludicrous insistence that baseball divide itself in the same way that football does.

So what happens? One division's winner finishes with the 5th best record (despite the fact that they didn't have to play the conference's 2nd-place finisher), and they're awarded the second seed in the "championship" tournament! As this topic's heading goes, "What a complete and utter joke."

Please return some sanity to the end of the season:
1.Scrap the needless exhibition tournament.
2. Eliminate football's divisions.
3. Allow each team to play every other conference team in a weekend series during the regular season.

In the process, the conference would restore credibility to the "champion" designation and put each teams' most representative résumé in front of the NCAA Selection Committee.

RCW, amen. I don't know if you are an ACC fan, but I love the passion, and I'm from the same school (of thought, that is). That's why I hope the Pac-12 does not institute a stupid conference tournament when Utah joins next year.

Dodger- I also like Gonzaga and think they would be a darkhorse team in the right regional, but what makes you think they are a better representative of the WCC than the Dons?
I don't mean that there is anything wrong with the USF players' character or morals, if that the way "represent" came across. I simply mean that Gonzaga as a team might fare better than USF in representing the conference. The Dons' overall record is not as good, and they don't have many signature wins on their resume.

Gonzaga OOC wins
Pacific (3)
aTm
Mizzou
Minnesota (2)
Iowa (2)
UCI (3)
UNM (3)
BYU

USF OOC wins
UC Davis (2)
Lamar
NMSU
Sac State
UCSB
Lou-La
San Jose State
Cal
Pacific (2)
Fresno
Cal Poly
CS Bakersfield

In terms of ranking, Gonzaga is currently 29 ISR, 68 RPI; USF is 49 ISR, 99 RPI.

Do conference tournaments suck?

Some ACC fans on this board have expressed their dissatisfaction with theirs. I have disparaged them in the past, pointing to particularly odious examples where the better team (regular season champion by far) was upended by a hot 7 or 8 seed and sat home while the sub-.500 8 seed went a quick and embarrassing 0-2 in the postseason. I am happy the Pac-10 does not have one and hoping they do not go to one when the list of teams in baseball expands next year. But are there any conference tournaments that "work"? People point to the SEC as perhaps the only example. But to me it means more games played internally, when they could be playing more OOC games and mix it up a bit more interregionally.

So, if this were a Rivals POLL, it would look like this:

Do conference tournaments suck?

1. Yes, they totally suck. We should eliminate them all and only take conference regular season champions for all autobids for the postseason.
2. Yes, they suck, but a couple of conference tournaments do not suck totally, and they're fun.
3. No, they don't suck, but-- Oh look! A squirrel!
