Long Beach should contend for a regional as the third team behind Fullerton and Irvine in the Big West. They have a good schedule as always that will keep their RPI in at-large range.

They lost Fri SP Gagnon and SP/RP Pinder but return the rest of the staff. Stuart was solid last year as the other SP. Buckley obviously knows what he's doing with the pitching staff.

They lost C/3B Marjama, OF Hibbert and SS Singer and, IMO, Marjama is the only one that they will miss much. Duffy will probably slide over to SS with OF/IF McNeil moving full-time to 2B. They have last year's part-time C Murai and previous starter Hoime (medical redshirt in '11) back behind the plate.

If Long Beach is going to get into a regional the position players are going to have to be more productive. They only hit .258 with 10 HR's. Long Beach plays in a graveyard for hitters but that's a little ridiculous, even with the new bats. Also, they were last in the Big West in fielding (part of that will be helped by Singer moving on) and they will need to do a better job of helping out their pitching staff because they don't have the offense to be giving up extra outs in the field.

"The Division I Baseball Committee, on a full-time basis, will include South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman and new UCF athletic director Todd Stansbury, who previously was the associate athletic director at Oregon State".

Who are the western representatives on the selection committee? IIRC, Marquess' term finished up and I am presuming Stansbury was one of the western reps.

A quick USD and UCSD note (1.11)

Re: USD - It will be a major development with the stadium renovations because it will allow them to host regionals and super regionals. They haven't been losing players due to having a small ballpark because they have had plenty of talent there. Cost of tuition is obviously a factor in roster depth.

Re: UCSD - From what I have read they will only move up to D1 if they are guaranteed to be in a conf but, they need to be admitted to a conf. Chicken and the egg situation. The Big West already turned them down once when they also declined on Bakersfield and added Hawaii. And, that was before the Big West added San Diego State for all sports except football, which gave the conf a foothold in San Diego so there isn't much need to have two members of the conf from there. The Big West is trying to stop being a halfway house for D2 teams moving up to D1 and their rationale is right because Riverside and Davis have added very little across the board (yes, they have had their moments here and there) and even though Northridge was already D1 they were basically a D2 athletics program participating in D1 and also haven't added much to the Big West.

UCSD is an outstanding academic institution. Without digging thru US News and that type of stuff, it has to be in the top 20 in the country among public schools.

I was going to ask you on Twitter if any of the Big West teams would be in the 80-100 range, such as Riverside or Cal Poly. I guess those two might be a little higher and in the 60-80 range? I'm figuring Long Beach will be in the list of bubble range teams from 40-60 with Fullerton and Irvine somewhere in the 1-40 range.

Can see the reluctance with Riverside after losing so much from their lineup so offense and defense will be major issues. They return Sat and Sun SP's Orozco and Frank, who were both solid last year, and could have a good bullpen with Stuart returning if Patito pitches like he did as a FR. A FR to keep an eye on is 26th rnd pick RHP Cody Dill. They will probably be in the middle of the Big West pack like they usually are.

Didn't expect to see any other Big West teams mentioned. UCSB is in rebuild mode in year one with Checketts, CSUN is in rebuild mode in year two with Curtis (although they have more experience than UCSB), Davis is in year one with Vaughn and has a solid nucleus back on the mound and at the plate but not enough difference makers to elevate them and Pacific will hit as long as they have the Sprague/Barbara combo coaching them but just doesn't have the pitching to be a factor due to being the only private school in the conf trying to divide up 11.7 rides.

It was already scheduled for this weekend as a non-conf series before BYU joined the WAC. They just decided to leave the series as is instead of moving it to later in the season.

You're selling Snow a little short. He was there for thirteen years with eleven regionals and four trips to Omaha. Weathers was solid for a while with the guys that Snow had recruited (Weaver era) but they petered out in his last couple of years.

The pitching has gotten better every year from '10 to present since Buckley came back from his two year absence while working for the Pirates. The hitting and fielding, on the other hand.......

They brought in Zepeda last year and Gilbert this year to work with the position players. They both have solid credentials - Zepeda at Cal Poly and Gilbert played for a long time in the minors with some stints in the majors. I don't see Buckley blowing those guys out and starting over with new coaches but who knows.

The bottom line is they need to recruit better position players. Prigatano and Patron are a good start, Duffy should be drafted in the first ten rounds (but hasn't played like it this season) and Metzger gives them good SR leadership but most of the guys they have playing would have trouble cracking the lineup at the better schools in the conference.
