Kirk Saarloos and Fullerton staff (6/27) (UPDATED)

I've heard for a while that Kirby and his family weren't happy in Eugene. Not a surprise he took a bit of a pay cut when a job opened up at Fullerton.

I forgot Casian was up there. That one should be a slam dunk.

Valenzuela is from the LA area and his family is still there. No brainer for the SC job. Hubbs will probably end up as the HC at Santa Clara, Casian ends up at Portland and the pitching coach part of the carousel comes to a stop.

Any word if Checketts is talking to Warrecker at Cal Poly? He was the HC at SBCC for ten years and that family name is very well known in baseball circles in SB.

Texas signee Josh Bell (2nd rounder)

"Again, I don't know anything about the Josh Bell situation"

Yet, you went on and on about it.

Josh Bell was the best HS bat in the draft. Period. He slid to the second round due to his signing demands. Pitt figured they would roll the dice due to the value of getting Bell there and if he didn't sign, they would get the pick back next year. IIRC, one of his parents is a teacher, if not both them, so his family has put a high value on education.

It wouldn't surprise me if UCSB went the JC route. Going with Warrecker would pretty much be doing that since he only has one year at the D1 level after 10 years as the HC at the JC in SB.

Another school looking for a pitching coach is UCR. Choate went over to D2 Grand Canyon last week. They might also be looking for somebody to coach position players because UCR also posted an ad for that job.

Aaron Fitt wrote on Twitter yesterday that UCR assistant Eddie Cornejo will be one of the assistants and Joe Ross, former UW assistant under Knutsen and currently a scout for Seattle, is being looked at by Checketts for the other spot.

UCR is looking to fill both assistant coaching spots with Cornejo going to UCSB and Choate going to D2 Grand Canyon.

Anderson was a redshirt JR. Balt rolled the dice in the 6th round last year that he would sign as a 3rd yr Soph.

I'm hearing the same rumor. They were teammates at Fullerton in '94.

So far, so good. I know the coaches are out scouting all over the place but haven't heard much news yet on verbal commits for this year's HS SR class.

Gonzaga pitcher Ryan Carpenter....

Carpenter's fastball speed was down and he had trouble with his command most of the season, which is why he was so inconsistent and went several rounds lower than he was projected to be drafted going into the year.

Interesting. Horton wasn't a pitcher (1B when he played) but Garrido did turn him into a pitching coach during his second stint at Fullerton from '91-'96 before Horton took over as the head coach in '97 when Garrido went to Texas.

Kendall, according to the Sacramento Bee's public employee database, Vanderhook made more as an assistant at UCLA than Peters does as the HC at UC Davis. The most recent figures are from 2009 and Hook made 14K more than Peters.

That database only factors in base salaries for most coaches. With camp money and apparel money being better at UCLA than UC Davis, Hook was probably making 25K+ more as an assistant at UCLA than Peters is as a HC at UC Davis.

It costs more to live in SoCal than Sacramento but if he moves to someplace like Simi Valley it won't be as drastic a difference than the affluent neighborhoods immediately around the campus.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with McNeil and the draft. His older brother is going to be a Soph in 2012 and started last year in the OF for Long Beach.

Watson should end up on campus at USC but DeJong will probably get drafted high enough to sign but we'll see........

Associate HC Vaughn would be a strong candidate to be promoted to the HC position. He pitched there from '89-'92.

From his bio - "The veteran of the Aggie baseball staff, Matt Vaughn enters his 19th season with the program, now as associate head coach. He has been an integral part of the Aggies success in that time, including two trips to the Division II College World Series (1995 and 2003) and one to the Division I postseason (2008). During his career, Vaughn's duties have included development of the Aggie pitching staff, recruiting and the numerous day-to-day duties of running a collegiate baseball program."

There hasn't been any news on the AD search coming out of Davis. I guess the administration doesn't feel much need to do any work during the summer........

A major problem with the athletic budget at Davis is they attempt to have too many sports for a program with their revenues. They cut a few sports a couple of years ago to start to alleviate that issue but is still an obstacle.

They attempt to have all sports besides the major ones (football, M/W basketball) funded in a similar proportion which means other sports including baseball don't get 100% of their scholarships funded.

The Big West has a rule that the priority sports (baseball is one of them) must have at least 80% of that sport's max number of scholarships funded and I have heard that Davis is between 80% and 90%, i.e. between about 9.5 and 10.5.

As we have also seen in this thread, coaches salaries at Davis are also an issue when Peters can go from a HC to an assistant job and have the compensation be similar or better (not factoring in cost of living differences).

The travel budget is also very limited and Davis hasn't left the state the last two years to play anybody except for bus rides to Reno for midweek games.

Kendall, here is what I have been able to dig up on Fullerton thus far.

Justin Garza, RHP, Bonita HS
AJ Kennedy, C, Savanna HS
Tyrone Taylor, OF, Torrance HS
David Olmedo-Barrera, SS, St. Francis HS

The first three will be playing at the Area Code Games that start tomorrow at Blair Field in Long Beach.
