WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — UCLA junior outfielder Jeff Gelalich has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and STANFORD junior right-handed pitcher Mark Appel has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 20-26, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday.

In four games last week, Gelalich batted .500, going 7-for-14 with three home runs, five RBI and seven runs. The La Verne, Calif., native logged a .611 on-base percentage and 1.143 slugging percentage, and did not strike out in any of his 18 plate appearances. He belted two homers in a 19-7 rout at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday before clubbing a two-run homer in a 9-3 win on Saturday against No. 25 Baylor. Gelalich has batted .407 with a .741 slugging percentage in UCLA’s first seven games of the season.

This is Gelalich’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 52nd all-time selection for UCLA.

In Appel’s start versus then-No. 7 Texas on Friday, he tossed a no-hitter into the fifth inning after retiring a career-best 10 consecutive batters. The Houston, Texas, product had a shutout into the eighth before his lone hitter in the inning scored. He walked three and scattered three hits in seven-plus innings. Appel (2-0) was awarded the win as the Cardinal upended Texas 7-2.

This is Appel’s first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Stanford’s 76th all-time selection.

DM:
I was inclined to pick as you did, but got slightly more conserative. Last season I made similar picks as you did this week & I was rewarded by going to the head of the class....Good luck.

BTW
Beavers: Welcome to the Valley Of the Sun this week. Unfortunately I live in Houston & have a Razorback visitor this week & will be watching the Houston College Classic with her. I do intend to travel & see you all on your visit in April.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — UCLA junior outfielder Jeff Gelalich has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Bruin sophomore right-handed pitcher Adam Plutko has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for March 5-11, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday.

Gelalich batted .563 (9-for-16) with one double and three runs over UCLA’s four wins last week. He went 9-for-13 (.692) in the three-game series sweep at No. 9 Georgia. Gelalich collected a career-high four hits in a 4-for-4 effort with one double on Friday, went 3-for-4 on Saturday and finished the series going 2-for-5 on Sunday. He leads UCLA’s offense with a .491 batting average through 15 games (27-for-55, 3 HR, 5 2B, 12 RBI, 17 runs).

This is Gelalich’s second career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 53rd all-time selection for UCLA. The La Verne, Calif., native received his first weekly honor on Feb. 28.

Plutko logged 11 strikeouts in his second career complete game shutout on Friday night at No. 9 Georgia, scattering five hits and no walks. Plutko’s start helped UCLA sweep the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga. The right-hander from Upland, Calif., allowed just one baserunner (fielding error by shortstop) from the second through fifth innings. Plutko improved to 2-1, lowering his ERA to 2.13. He leads UCLA’s pitching staff with 33 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.

This is Plutko’s second career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and UCLA’s 60th all-time selection.

Pac 12 Player & Pitcher of the Week (Week 5)

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — ARIZONA junior third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and UCLA freshman left-handed pitcher Grant Watson has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for March 12-18, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.

Mejias-Brean hit safely in all five games last week, including three multi-hit contests to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. He was instrumental in Arizona’s weekend series win over Washington State as the Wildcats found themselves down 5-0 in the first inning of the Saturday double-header. Mejias-Brean’s two-run single in the bottom of the first inning sparked the ‘Cats to a three-run first inning as they eventually overcame the deficit to win 8-7. In the second half of the twinbill, the junior collected two more hits and drove in three runs as the UA swept the double-header with a 12-9 win. Mejias-Brean hit a team-best .450 last week, including a .714 average (5-for-7) with runners in scoring position. His eight total RBI on the week improved his season tally to 23, which is tied for second-most in the Pac-12. On the week, Mejias-Brean had 18 assists and made three putouts.

This is Mejias-Brean’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 56th all-time selection for Arizona.

Watson went 2-0 in three appearances—two of them starts—for the Bruins last week. On Tuesday, the freshman limited USC to one run and seven hits in six innings at Dodger Stadium, recording five strikeouts and no walks in UCLA’s 7-2 win in the Dodgertown Classic. In a relief appearance on Friday night, Watson registered three consecutive outs in the eighth and ninth innings with the game tied, 5-5. In the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, the Bakersfield, Calif., native limited ASU to two runs and four hits in six-plus innings to earn the victory. Watson became the first UCLA pitcher to notch two victories in one week since Trevor Bauer accomplished the feat as a freshman in 2009. He posted a 2.08 ERA in 13.0 innings pitched last week.

This is Watson’s first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and UCLA’s 61st all-time selection. A Bruin has won the honor twice in as many weeks, with sophomore Adam Plutko taking the nod last week.

Also Nominated (Player):
Abe Ruiz, ASU; Michael Conforto, OSU; Trevor Brown, UCLA; Parker Morin, UTAH; Derek Jones, WSU.

Also Nominated (Pitcher):
Trevor Williams, ASU; Dan Child, OSU; Joe Pond, UTAH; Tyler Davis, WASH; J.D. Leckenby, WSU.

Score analysis

Ugly....
  • Top average score was 3.67 for Ariz 2-1. 10/15 got that right.
  • Second was 3.20 for UCLA 2-1. (9/15 got that.) These are the only two that the voters on average picked correctly.
  • Third was OSU 3-0, average score of 2.60. Only 1/15 picked that, but 10/15 had the next best thing, OSU 2-1.
  • Another awful score was UW 2-1, average of 2.13. 2/15 got that right.
  • But the absolute worst prediction probably ever since I've been doing these was Utah 2-1, which nobody picked and had an average of 1.07.
  • Because 14/15 picked a USC sweep, if they had lost the last game, the average score would have been 0.07.
Not sure how many of you are interested in the score analysis bullets, so let me know....

borgguy:
Very prudent. I watched AU when they played Rice here in Houston last week in a pair of midweek games that they split on. The cats are a scrappy bunch. Almost any team would welcome Alex Mejia. He is Mr. Clutch in the batters box. Not really built like a shortstop. More like an outfielder; but has a VERY quick throwing release. AU out hit Rice in the first game, but couldn't put the hits together to score and win. Day 2 they put 8 up on the board for a victory. Sorry, no disrespect ment, but I picked AU 2-1 over OSU. But then again after week 1, I'm in the bottom of the pack; as are my Devils. Best of luck to all.

FYI: It does snow in Tucson!
