COLUMN: Stanford's Appel w/ no regrets (CBT)

I applaud Mark Appel for staying and earning his degree; especially from such a prestigious university as Stanford.

Andrew Luck stayed for his senior year at Stanford to earn his degree. Do ya think it hurt him?

Personally I believe ALL professional sports should allow ALL college athletes to finish their education-and not 10 or 15 years after they have retired from professional sports. High school athletes: HANDS OFF. Period.

We hooked up very briefly just before the start of game 2.
Here is what I saw...from my perspective & weg may have a different perspective.
Stanford strenths:
  • Bullpen
  • Infield
  • Ability to battle back
  • We all know Rice touched Appel pretty good, but that is short term.
Stanford weaknesses
  • Outfield arms. Last year I saw them in the ASU & Stanford series & was VERY impressed by the spped & accuracy of the outfield arms. Didn't see it in this series.
  • Catcher. 2 errors by soph on 1 play...little league stuff
  • Not as aggrssive on the bases as they have been in the past.
  • Bats & offense...attributable to Rice pitching?

Rice strengths
  • Downtown power
  • Pitching. Starters & bullpen.
  • Overall just sound baseball.
Rice weaknesses
  • Speed on the bases.

This is all IMO. Weg...your input....

Pac 12 Player/Pitcher of Week 1

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Oregon junior first baseman Ryon Healy has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and Arizona junior right-handed pitcher James Farris has been voted Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 11-17, the Conference office announced Tuesday.

Healy led the Ducks to a season-opening series sweep of Hawaii over the weekend. He batted .533 (8-15) with two multi-hit games and wrapped up the series with a .588 on base percentage and a .933 slugging percentage. The West Hills, Calif., native produced a career-best four hits in a 9-5 win over the Rainbows on Sunday, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. On Saturday, Healy went 3-for-3 with a career-high three doubles with one RBI and one run scored. In the opener, he went 1-for-3 and stole a base.

This is Healy’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the eighth all-time selection for Oregon.

Farris opened his junior campaign in convincing fashion, tallying a career-best eight strikeouts in a 14-1 victory over Coppin State on Saturday at Hi Corbett Field. The Gilbert, Ariz., native retired the first nine batters of the game before allowing back-to-back hits and one run in the fourth. He returned to form in short order, retiring the next 15 batters he faced. In eight innings of work, he allowed two hits and no walks while fanning eight batters and posting a 1.12 ERA. Including his two postseason starts last year during the Wildcats’ national championship run, Farris has worked into the eighth inning in three consecutive starts. He has 19 strikeouts against three walks during that span.

This is Farris’ first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Arizona’s 51st all-time selection.

Also Nominated (Player): Brandon Dixon, ARIZ; Drew Stankiewicz, ASU; Brian Celsi, CAL; Jake Rodriguez, OSU; Justin Ringo, STAN; Kevin Kramer, UCLA.

Also Nominated (Pitcher): Ryan Kellog, ASU; Ryan Mason, CAL; Jake Reed, ORE; Matt Boyd, OSU; Grant Watson, UCLA.

2013 Pac-12 Players of the Week: Feb. 19 – Ryon Healy, Jr., 1B, ORE.

2013 Pac-12 Pitchers of the Week: Feb. 19 – James Farris, Jr., RHP, ARIZ.

Week 1 in Pac 12 Baseball

With Conference teams winning a combined 23 games during opening weekend, five Pac-12 squads head into the second week of the season ranked in Baseball America’s top 25 poll: Oregon State (6), UCLA (12), Oregon (14), Stanford (15) and Arizona (23). All 11 teams found the win column last week, with four posting series sweeps. California starts its week with a trip to Stanford for a traditional rivalry matchup with the Cardinal before heading south to take on No. 25 UC Irvine. The Cardinal rounds out the week at home against Fresno State. The Wildcats open the week with a two game series at Long Beach Sate before returning to Tucson host San Jose State. Oregon clashes with Loyola Marymount, and Utah hits the road for a four-game set with UC Davis, while UCLA travels to Waco to play Baylor. The Beavers square off with San Diego State, while Washington welcomes Eastern Michigan. Washington meets Creighton and Lamar twice each in the YMBL Cardinal Classic in Baumont, Texas, and USC plays host to Cal State Northridge. Arizona State heads to Knoxville to take on SEC opponent Tennessee in a weekend series.

First & second base need work & we should be looking for a Sunday Starter...

Starting right-hander Darin Gillies (0-1) was chased from the game with no outs in 1st inning after he allowed five earned runs on zero hits, with six walks, including five consecutive to lead off the frame. Loo Flush

Was very pleased with some of the freshman coming out of the bullpen.

Offense is sparatic.

Next week should be interesting. We go to Tennessee who dropped 3 of 4 to UNLV. ASU Friday starter also has something to prove to Volunteer Coach Dave Serrano from over the summer.

Well, no big surprise here........

Freshman Ryan Kellogg is expected to move into the Arizona State starting pitching rotation this weekend at Tennessee.

The 6-foot-5 left-hander from Ontario, Canada, threw four scoreless innings of relief in his ASU debut last week, picking up a win over Bethune-Cookman. He was a 12th-round draft pick by Toronto — the highest drafted recruit not to sign — out of Henry Street High School and was the Canadian junior national team’s most valuable player.

“Ryan threw really well,” ASU coach Tim Esmay said. “He showed us he could be in the mix as far as starting. I would imagine we might go down that path and give him that opportunity.”

Kellogg is likely to replace sophomore Darin Gillies as the Sunday starter. Gillies, who made 10 starts last season, was knocked out in the second inning last week and charged with five runs. No. 20 ASU rallied from a 6-1 deficit but lost that game 7-6 for a 2-1 opening weekend.

“We gave a lot of freebies away,” Esmay said.

The Sun Devils committed six errors — half of those by new second baseman James McDonald — and walked 22 batters.

“It gives us an idea what we need to work on,” Esmay said

Ya think?Drink

Well, You guys might have a year like ASU did a few back. If my memory serves me right they did not lose too many all year.

Hay Guys:
Careful what you wish for. In 2010 ASU won their first 24 games. The streak ended on April 2, 2010 with a loss to....gotta pause here...getting choked up.....The Duckies in Oregon. They ended the season 52-10.

CWS: 0-2

It is not the first games of the season ya gotta win. IT IS THE LAST 10 that really count.
Thumbs Up
