Santa Clara search coming to an end? (UPDATE: 2PM)

Kendall: Are there any reports regarding why Cooper turned Santa Clara down (salary, length of deal, budget for program, etc.?) Earlier your reported Esquer would "take a peak" at Santa Clara once the CAL season had ended. Has he taken a peak and, if so, is there any interest on his part? Finally, will Giarratano take the job if offered? Thanks.

I appreciate your insight. I suspect you're being polite. It seems Cooper would have known the WCC's bid situation long before he interviewed and got all the way to the point of the job being offered. It sounds, as others on boards are speculating, that Santa Clara is simply not willing to offer even the average going rate for a current Division I head coach and will therefore end up with a current assistant who is looking for their first head coaching job. The Broncos may get lucky going that route, but it's disappointing to hear that is the level of their commitment to the program.

Some posters on the "old" board are suggesting that Dan O'Brien of UCSD has interviewed for the job along with two unnamed "local" candidates. Are those reports credible and, if so, who are the local candidates? It appears from the outside that Santa Clara is stumbling badly on this one. It's getting late. If they don't make a very credible hire in the near future, they will be coming out of this "process" looking inept IMO.

Kendalll: Your friend Mr. Fitt has tweeted that Santa Clara will announce their new coach this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. PST and that it's a current head coach. Is it Dan O'Brien of UCSD or a surprise candidate? What can you tell us and what do you think?

West Coast Staff Openings

Kendall: Seems like there are still quite a few staff openings on the West Coast as we get well into July: CAL (Esquer extension?/pitching coach-recruiting coordinator); Oregon (pitching coach-recruiting coordinator); UCLA (associate head coach-recruit coordinator); UCSB (remainder of staff); Santa Clara (remainder of staff); LMU (pitching coach); UC Riverside (pitching coach/recruiting coordinator); UCSD (head coach and staff) and possibly others I am unaware of. Do you have any more news on any of the openings and aren't these programs taking a bit long to fill their recruiting coordinator positions in particular?

Any thoughts or reaction to Dan O'Brien's hiring of Gabe Ribas as Santa Clara's pitching coach/recruiting coordinator? Should Bronco fans be concerned that he's bounced around up to this point?

Kendall: It's been over two weeks - Dave Esquer still doesn't have an extension and none of the other coaching jobs referred to in the original post have been filled. You've reported that Oregon, UCLA and CAL are "taking their time" and that the first two at least (who knows what in the world is going on at CAL - everything the Athletics Dismantler (AD) does there is inexplicable) are important hires that they want to get right. You've also reported on rumored finalists for some of the jobs . . . but still no hirings. School starts at some of these institutions in about three weeks. First, is this highly unusual? Second, is there any latest word on when and by who these openings (including UCR, SCU, UCSB and LMU) will be filled?

As always Kendall, thanks for all the information. We'll look forward to your updates next week. It is a very odd situation on the West Coast this summer. In addition to those listed in the thread, the Northridge pitching coach job and the UCSD Head Coach jobs are vacant as well. Doyle Wilson is out at USC and apparently hasn't landed anywhere and the same is true of the previous Santa Clara staff. Add to that the reports that Pat Casey at Oregon State is again considering stepping down and you have a very shaky coaching scene here in the West. As many have commented on, the situation at CAL is beyond bizarre. How the A.D. there has kept that job is beyond me.

Seems like new Santa Clara Head Coach Dan O'Brien has gone "outside the box" bringing in young, high energy assistants from N. Colorado/Northwestern/ Holy Cross (Ribas) and UVA (Smith) instead of opting for West Coast guys. Sounds potentially exciting and encouraging - what do you think?

WCC preview .....

Kendall: Thanks for the preview, but why no preview of USD and Pepperdine for 2012? Also, the article indicates that Lechich "sat out" 2011 after transferring from Cal. Actually, he had 56 AB's and pitched 19+ innings for the Bears last season - he's not eligible at USD this year is he? Finally, certainly understand projecting the Broncos at the bottom of the pack but do you have any early word on how new Coach Dan O'Brien and his staff are doing?

Kendall, West Coast follower here. Hear anything about Matt Curtis to USC as the first assistant? Who are the finalists at St. Mary's? Thanks.

Kendall: Shortly after Smith announced his retirement I had heard that current Cal Poly Pomona HC Randy Betten would be seriously considered for the opening. He was a UCR assistant under Smith for 6 years before taking over at CPP the last 4 years where he's had success. Have you heard anything about Betten being in the mix at UCR?
