Pre-season clash of the titans

Two of the top high school teams in the nation faced off this weekend in Las Vegas as Bishop Gorman (NV) hosted Harvard-Westlake (CA).

Harvard-Westlake RHP Lucas Giolito, the top ranked player in the class of 2012, allowed one earned run over five innings in spite of topping out at "only" 95 mph. Giolito impressed with his ability to get outs without his A stuff and led the Wolverines to a 4-2 win.

Bishop Gorman 3B/RHP Joey Gallo, the top ranked 3B in the nation (#6 overall), faced Giolito three times and collected a pair of hits against the flamethrower. Gallo also pitched two innings in relief, he struck out four and topped out at 95 mph.

Harvard-Westlake's Max Fried, the #2 ranked LHP (10th overall) homered against Gorman on Saturday before pitching well on Sunday. Fried topped out at 92 mph with his fastball and had his excellent secondary stuff working well.

Both teams will be highly ranked when PG releases the 2012 National Top 50 preseason poll Monday February 20. The 6-10th ranked teams will be announced on Monday February 13, with each of the top five being announced each week day leading up to the complete release on Feb 20.

Hawaii Baseball Academy is run by two very good local high school coaches and they are starting up a new program on Oahu.

Here is their website:

The other team I know of from Oahu is the ABD Warriors, who have sent teams to many high level events in the past. Their website:

Best of luck!

Tampa Jesuit rings in new year in style

Tampa Jesuit (FL) kicked off the 1st Pitch Classic last night with an 8-0 win against Land O'Lakes High School.

The Tigers kicked off the festivities with RHP/SS Lance McCullers presenting the 2011 Jackie Robinson Award (HS Baseball equivalent to the Heisman Trophy) he earned at the PG All-American Classic to Jesuit HS.

McCullers then turned it over to the #1 overall pick of the 2007 MLB Draft and current Tampa Bay Rays ace LHP David Price. Price threw out the cermonial first pitch to Nolan Schultz, who got the start behind the plate.

In spite of the presence of those two flamethrowers, Jesuit had plenty of more pitching to show off. The Tigers used four juniors to combine on a one-hit shutout with 15 combined strikeouts.

MIF/RHP Spencer Trayner got the start and struck out five over the first three innings. LHP/OF John Kilichowski sat down five in two scoreless innings of relief. RHP Jordan Parnell struck out the side in his inning and C/RHP/3B Adrian Chacon closed out the 8-0 win with a pair of strikeouts of his own.

Chacon, a primary Catcher who is currently ranked No. 61 in the class of 2013 is the soft tosser of the group, as he generally pitches "only" in the upper 80s with good command. The other three have all been over 90 mph in the past year and all got their 2012 seasons off to a good start.

C Joe Altieri served as the Tigers DH last night and went three-for-three with a pair of RBI doubles early on to put the game out of reach quickly.

The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow night against Lake Wales High School in a game that will feature a marquee pitching matchup. Lake Wales will send ace lefty Tyler Pike to the mound, Jesuit will counter with McCullers.

Olympia draws a crowd in opener

Olympia (FL) High School got their preseason underway last night with over 100 scouts on hand for their 11-0 win over First Academy. The Titans' pair of high level draft prospects RHP Walker Weickel and OF Jesse Winker are likely to continue drawing large crowds throughout the season.

Weickel got the start and was on a strict pitch count, which caused him to exit after 3 1/3 innings. In that time Weickel struck out seven without allowing a hit or run. His fastball touched 95 mph, while sitting 91-94. PG Scouting Director David Rawnsley noted of Weickel in a recent draft profile (link): "[font=verdana,sans-serif]The big key as to whether Weickel can get into the top half of the first round will be his breaking ball this spring."

Weickel's breaking ball, which typically sat in the 71-74 range last year, was 74-76 with improved spin and break. Which is the result of a concerted work in the offseason to improve the bite on the pitch.

Winker went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk. The slugger who is one of the best power bats in the country just missed hitting his first homer of the season, crushing a no-doubter that ultimately went foul.

MIF/RHP Nick Gordon, an exciting 2014 prospect, also created a buzz. Gordon went 2-for-3 at the plate and pitched in relief, running his fastball up to 91 mph. At this point Nick, who is the son of big league veteran Tom "Flash" Gordon, and younger brother of Dodgers SS Dee Gordon, looks to be one of the top prospects in the class of 2014.

Olympia will be a fun team to watch this season and are expected to be strong contenders in Class 8A in Florida this season.

Pike, Winter Haven pen knock off Jesuit, McCullers

Winter Haven (FL) went in to Tampa Jesuit HS for the final tune up before the regular season begins with a matchup of two power arms.

Jesuit sent ace RHP Lance McCullers to the hill to face Winter Haven LHP Tyler Pike.

Pike, a Florida State commit is the 13th ranked LHP in the nation. After beating Broken Arrow (OK) in a spring tournament last year to prevent a heavily anticipated matchup between first rounder Archie Bradley and Dylan Bundy, Pike is earning a reputation as a giant killer. Pike sat 89-91 in his first outing of the season, working in and out very well with good command and had his big breaking curveball working very well. Pike threw four no-hit innings before turning it over to the bullpen.

McCullers threw well also, working in the mid 90s, topping out at 96, per usual. McCullers will pitch in front of huge crowds all season as a potential first round pick.

The game was decided in relief, with Luke Borders earning the win with 1 1/3 innings on the mound, and a game winning grand slam in extra innings to lift the Blue Devils to a 5-2 win over Jesuit.

thebhoy, thanks for the message!

We will definetly be keeping an eye on the Hawks this spring. They were in the conversation for our national top 50 preseason rankings but missed the cut. They will be in the Pacific Top 25 to start the year and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them crack the National Rankings.

SoCal is loaded again after a slightly down year and we had to make some tough decisions. Can't wait for the season to start.
