Day two
  • Oregon State 4, Arizona 3. FR RHP Andrew Moore improved to 5-0 as he held the Wildcats to 9 hits and 2 earned runs over 5.2 innings, and the Beavers win the opening conference series over the defending national champions. Scott Schultz struck out the two batters he faced for his third save. Dylan Davis was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs on a double. Kavin Keyes was 2 for 3. JR C Jake Rodriguez was 0 for 2 but had two RBIs on two sac flies. Three Wildcats had 2 hits, and Arizona outhit Oregon State 10 to 7. C Riley Moore was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs for the Cats.
    OSU leads series 2-0.

  • Arizona State 4, Washington State 1. They didn’t return the spanking they got yesterday, but ASU evened the win-loss mark with Wazzu. Wazzu’s Tanner Chleborad gave up four runs over 6.0 innings, but only one was earned. Seven Devils had at least one hit. Ryan Kellogg went 7 innings and gave up 3 hits and one earned run for the win.
    Series tied 1-1.

  • Oregon 8, USC 4. The Trojans scored four in the bottom of the 6th to take a 4-2 lead, but the Ducks stormed back with six in the top of the 8th, highlighted by a bases-loaded double off the top of the rightfield wall by Scott Heineman that just missed being a grand slam by inches. All six of those runs we charged to Nigel Nootbaar, but only one was earned as the Trojans committed 6 errors in the game. Heineman was 3 for 6 with 2 RBIs for the Ducks. Freshman LF Bobby Stahel from Needles was 3 for 4 for USC.
    Oregon leads series 2-0.

  • California 9, Utah 5. JR first baseman Devon Rodriguez’s grand slam in the second inning put the Bears up 5-0, and they never looked back. SR left-hander Justin Jones pitched 5.0 and gave up two runs, both earned. Tyler Yagi went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs for the Utes.
    Cal leads series 2-0.

  • Game one: UCLA 3, Washington 2, 15 innings. In the continuation of yesterday’s fogged out game in LA, the Bruins scored two in the 8th to tie the game at two apiece. UW had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the 15th but couldn’t push a runner across to break the 2-2 tie. UCLA, in the exact same situation in the bottom half of the frame, finished the job when freshman LF Cristoph Bono slapped a two-out single to right.

Game two: UCLA 5, Washington 0. Cristoph Bono led UCLA offensively again, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Bruin pitching kept the Huskies off the scoreboard for 22 consecutive innings. RHP Nick Vander Tuig accounted for 9 of those innings, pitching a complete game in the nightcap, giving up 7 hits and striking out 8.
    UCLA leads series 2-0.

Thanks for the update borgguy. I'm right where I want to be. I can quietly sneak up on the leaders.

Ya know, BB, If you tell them you are going sneak up on them, it's not call "sneaking" if you let them know it.

Day three
Mild surprises: three sweeps in the opening weekend of conference play, plus two series wins by the underdogs.
  • Oregon State 8, Arizona 4. OSU’s JR C Jake Rodriguez, who replaced Nate Esposito in the bottom of the 3rd for defensive purposes, was a perfect 2 for 2 with 5 RBIs, 2 doubles, and a sac fly, and the Beavers swept the defending national champions on the road. Recuperating JR LHP Ben Wetzler pitched 4.2 innings and gave up only 2 hits and 1 earned run, but he didn’t figure in the decision. Winning pitcher JR RHP Brandon Jackson, from Roseburg, OR, gave up two earned runs and yielded Oregon State’s first home run of the season, a solo jack deep into left center by Johnny Field that made the score 7-3 OSU. Leadoff hitter JR 2B Andy Peterson was 2 for 4. FR SS Kevin Newman was 3 for 4 for the Wildcats.
    OSU sweeps series 3-0.

  • Washington State 11, Arizona State 8. The Cougars flashed some offensive muscle and took the series on the road from #19 ASU. Down 7-1 after five innings, ASU mounted a comeback, scoring seven runs over the next four innings, and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th with one out, but FR 1B David Graybill grounded into a game-ending double play to seal ASU’s doom. The Devils outhit the Cougs 16-11, but they also outerred them 3-0. Trever Allen was an outstanding 4 for 5 with 4 RBIs for the Sun Devils, and Drew Stankiewicz complemented him with a 3 for 4 2 RBI performance. Jason Monda led the Cougs with a 3 for 4, 3 RBI day. Monda also pitched one full inning, the 8th, yielding one hit, a leadoff single, before inducing a popup and a double play ground out.
    Wazzu wins series 2-1.

  • USC 5, Oregon 3. In a battle between freshman pitchers, USC’s Kyle Twomey outpitched Oregon’s Cole Irvin, pitching 8 innings an giving up 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned). Playing small ball, USC got on the board in the 1st without a hit. They added three more in the 4th and led 4-0 before Oregon could break the zero with a solo homer by Mitchell Tolman in the 5th. Oregon’s 2-run 8th inning comeback fell a couple runs short. JR C Jake Hernandez led the Trojans with 1 hit and 3 RBIs on a bases-clearing double in the 4th. USC FR SS Blake Lacey was 3 for 4.
    Oregon wins series 2-1.

  • California 6, Utah 4. Utah jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but Cal evened the score in the 6th and took a 5-4 lead in the 7th. FR CF Devin Pearson led the Bear attack going 3 for 4 with a double and 1 RBI. Utah’s JR CF Braden Anderson was 2 for 5 with 1 RBI.
    Cal sweeps series 3-0.

  • UCLA 3, Washington 0. UW brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th three times, as they had two runners on with nobody out, but they couldn’t scratch a single run across the plate, and the Bruins held the Huskies scoreless for 31 consecutive innings. SO DH Chris Keck led the Bruins going 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and a double. Three Huskies had two hits apiece.
    UCLA sweeps series 3-0.

FB and borgguy, I just thought I would let you know that I had to attend counseling after reading your posts. I'm feeling much better about myself now. However, my wife did tell me today that I needed to stop acting like a 6-year old.

Thanks for bringing my problem to light so I could get help.

WOW, 17 participants, not bad. Thanks FB for dragging over some folks from Rivals. It's also great to see some SEC and other non Beaver posters on the board. It would be great to see more.

I hear you. The Ducks and RD should also be concerned about the Wildcats after being swept at home.

well, you know.. It is a total crapshoot on the rest of the teams. It is not like I really follow them at all besides the beavers.
I called my team, so I am happy with that. The key to the ducks success, is to play the hot team the following week.. when they are not so hot.. lol

Yeah, but starting 0-3 in the basement is tough. Total mind screw if you ask me.
