Explanations
The reminders:
  • Vote for the team you expect to win and whether the results will be 3-0 or 2-1.
  • Pick teams in the exact order posted. This makes it easier for me to tabulate.
  • Use the team abbreviations provided. (That means ARIZ, not UA; UW, not Wash; etc.)
  • You can change your picks up until first pitch of the first game. (But let me know so I don’t calculate points using your initial picks.)
  • There are no prizes. We play for glory.
  • Points are awarded in the following manner:

    Pick . . Result . . Pts.
    3-0 . . . 3-0 . . . . 6
    . . . . . 2-1 . . . . 3
    . . . . . 1-2 . . . . 1
    . . . . . 0-3 . . . . 0
    2-1 . . . 3-0 . . . . 3
    . . . . . 2-1 . . . . 4
    . . . . . 1-2 . . . . 2
    . . . . . 0-3 . . . . 1
This week’s games
(using Baseball America’s rankings[ISR])
  • #3/[1] OSU (15-0) at #20/[124] Ariz (12-5)
  • [89] WSU (9-6) at #14/[9] ASU (10-2)
  • #16/[38] Ore (11-5) at [147] USC (7-8)
  • [77] Cal (9-7) at [135] Utah (7-6)
  • [145] UW (4-11) at #11/[26] UCLA (11-3)

An example ballot would look like this:
    Ariz 3-0
    WSU 2-1
    Ore 3-0
    Utah 3-0
    UW 2-1

Week 5 Series
  • Top series this week features two of the top teams in the conference and two contenders for the conference crown: Unbeaten (15-0) #3 Oregon State (1st) travels to defending national champion, (13-5) #20 Arizona (4th). OSU is currently ranked #1 in the ISRs and will have to win at least four, perhaps all five, games this week to stay there. Arizona is currently #124 ISR, after suffering four losses to sub-500 teams. But they are playing at home, a big boost. UA is second in the conference in BA at .308 (OSU is third at .300) and second in fielding (OSU is sixth). OSU’s pitching is tops in the league at 1.06 versus Arizona’s 3.67 (sixth).

  • In what looks (on paper) to be a close series, Wazzu (9-6) visits #14 ASU (10-2) in a battle between teams with the 7th and 2nd best records respectively. Wazzu boasts the league’s best team BA at .323, compared to ASU’s .283, good for sixth. The Devils have a decided edge in pitching with a third-best ERA of 2.25 vs. Wazzu’s 4.35, which is just a couple decimal points better than cellar-dweller UW’s. The Cougs have also shown some very sloppy defensive play, especially in their opening series at Western Carolina, and they are tied for last with Utah in fielding. ASU is not much better, so who commits the most errors could be key in this series.

  • #16 Oregon, with a conference 5th-best record of 11-5, takes on 10th place USC (7-8). The Ducks look like the Beavers of old, with a very good defense (tops in the Pac) and decent pitching (fifth at 2.71). But their hitting is dead last at .221. USC’s pitching is not great, but they are most balanced between pitching/defense and batting than UO is. If the Trojan starters have a good weekend, the Ducks could be in for trouble.

  • In a closely matched series in the bottom half of the conference, 8th place Cal (9-7) visits 9th place Utah (7-6). Neither team is higher than sixth in any category. Give the Utes a slight edge in pitching, and Cal an edge in batting and fielding, and let’s play some mediocre ball!

  • This week’s blowout special has conference-worst UW (4-11) visiting 3rd place #11 UCLA (11-3). The Bruins, despite being ranked higher than the Beavers in one of the polls, are only seventh in BA (.257) and fourth in ERA (2.36). But UW is ninth and eleventh respectively. I suspect the Huskies will turn it around at some point this season, but I don’t know if this is the weekend.

Note: 6th place Stanford (10-5)--who dropped from #13 out of the BA rankings entirely--is idle this weekend.

YEAH!!!!! IT'S HERE!!!!

Okay 1st to pick

OSU 3-0
ASU 3-0
Ore 3-0
Utah 3-0
UCLA 3-0

I'm going for broke! OSU going to be the first team to win 20 games this year and they are going to have the best start in school history. Utah and Oregon are shaky sweeps, but what the heck. I'll either top the charts or compete with RD for the bottom dweller.

No, no, no. Farmers love beavers. So do the traveling salesmen that stay at the farmer's house/barn.

More Beaver is always better. Unfortunately, the darn evironmentalist's philosphy of "Eat a Beaver - Save a Tree" has reduced the number of Beavers. With this said, as a meat eater, nothing better than the taste of a good Beaver.
