All it took for North Carolina to rally were a couple of balls that didn't leave the infield.

The top-ranked Tar Heels used a pair of wild pitches to rally for a 2-1 victory over the No. 13 Owls in the Astros Foundation College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

"We just didn't get the hit when we needed it," Rice coach Wayne Graham said his team stranded 10 base runners, including six in scoring position. "It seems like every game we play is like this."

The inability to manufacture runs at the plate wasted another solid outing by righthander Austin Kubitza, who struck out nine and kept a Tar Heels offense that averaged 10 runs entering the game scoreless for six innings.

The middle of the North Carolina batting order went a combined 2-for-10, with cleanup hitter Skye Bolt striking out three times.

Mike Zolk and Brian Holberton (3-for-4) hit consecutive singles to begin the seventh, and Zolk advanced to third on a sacrifce fly by Parks Jordan. Zolk tied the game at 1-1 when he scored on a wild pitch by Kubitza, snapping his streak of 19 1/3 scoreless innings to begin the season.

Tar Heels lefthander Kent Emanuel was equally stingy, holding the Owls to one run and routinely escaping trouble. Rice scored its only run when Michael Aquino led off the second inning with a triple and scored on a squeeze bunt by Leon Byrd. Christian Stringer had three hits for the Owls.

In the ninth, Chaz Fank scored the go-ahead run when a wild pitch from reliever Zech Lemond bounced away from catcher Geoff Perrott. Perrott's throw appeared to be in time, but Frank slid under the tag. The Owls threw out a runner at the plate earlier in the inning.

The Owls' pitching staff has a 1.72 team earned-run average but the offense is batting only .264 and averaging three runs per game.
