Okay, I must confess, I'm texting and driving right now as I am on my way home from the Beavers game. FB, I can't agree more. Boyd is the best player on the team. He should be playing every inning. He may be the best hitter and is probably the best pitcher after Fry. He could also be the best position player. So, he gets to pitch to 4 batters and play 1 and a 1/3 inning all weekend. He hits one batter and Yeskie yanks him. What a confidence booster.

Okay, back to driving.

Florida Beaver wrote:

Why would/did Yeskie pull Boyd?!?!?!
Wetzler outpitched Appel. Both faced 31 batters over 7.0 IP. Wetzler allowed 2 runs (thanks to poor bullpen relief) on 7 hits and struck out 5. Appel allowed 2 runs on 9 hits and struck 4. It's a shame to think that the Wetzler and the Beavers could have won this game if Yeskie had brought in Scott Schultz instead of Gorton and left Matt Boyd in there longer and brought in Bryant for the 9th. I was not sure Benny was going to go as far as he did, after showing the control problems early, but this was a game he should have had in his W column.

Tomorrow is the big game.
Yuck. What a horrible end to an awesome Ben Wetzler performance. I must be missing something in Yeskie's pitching choices and his philosophy. Why Ryan Gorton in such a close game? Of course he gives up a double and a triple. Why let Scott Schultz throw only one pitch (a popup out)? Why pitch Matt Boyd to only one batter (a strikeout)? Why bring in Brocker with a runner on third? Okay, he struck the last guy out. Good. But then to send him out there again in the 9th? Everyone knows he has trouble, especially in close games, especially late in close games. Why Schultz and Boyd, two guys with great results, only pitch to two batters? And Brocker faces seven, four of whom reach safely? Where was Bryant? Where was Starr? Why only one batter for Boyd?

Credit Stanford. They have a record of doing this to a lot of teams: Do nothing, do nothing, do nothing...then BAM! Four or five runs in the 8th or 9th to win it. But this could have been won with better pitching management. I am not going to jump on the fire Yeskie bandwagon, but his decisions have me scratching my head all the time. And I have to wonder if it is only he making the horrible decisions. Would not Casey, watching the game, react the way the rest of us Beaver fans do? "Nate, what? You're bringing Brocker in again in a close game in the late innings? Let's keep Boyd in there a few more batters until Bryant is warm." Would Casey be sitting there saying, "Yeah, okay, whatever you want to do. I'm just watching the game. I don't have any say on the pitching"?

There's more going on than we are getting from GameTracker.

WildCard, nice relief pitching there tonight. Stanford's pen did a hell of a lot better than Oregon State's. Congrats.

Kendall's picks from his column; College Weekend Preview:

No. 10 Stanford at No. 23 Oregon State
-- This important Pac-12 series has major implications not only in conference, but also on the national stage. The Cardinal has one of the nation’s top one-two punches on the weekend in left-handed pitcher Brett Mooneyham and right-handed pitcher Mark Appel, but both tend to go into lulls at times. Both must be exceptional this weekend against the Beavers, who desperately need a strong showing this weekend to improve their long-shot at most NCAA Regional hosting chances. -- PG Pick: OREGON STATE
No. 7 Purdue at No. 14 UCLA
-- In terms of actual implications on the national stage, it probably doesn’t get more important than this series. Though it’s being getting downplayed by Purdue coach Doug Schreiber for good reasons, there’s no question this series means everything to the Boilermakers. Should Purdue take care of business against the Bruins, there’s a very good chance it’s a national seed entering the postseason. For those of you scoring at home, the Big Ten has never had a national seed. -- PG Pick: PURDUE
No. 13 Oregon at No. 9 Arizona
-- The Wildcats have quietly put together a very solid campaign this spring with ace right-handed pitcher Kurt Heyer leading the charge. Arizona needs some help from an RPI standpoint to get in the national seed mix, but things could change in its favor this weekend. The Wildcats must be great against the Ducks, who possess one of the nation’s best pitching staffs with a solid set of starters, led by Alex Keudell and Jake Reed. UO would solidify its position as a potential national seed with a series win, while the Wildcats would get more in the discussion. -- PG Pick: ARIZONA

Pick analysis

This week's top two series have been voted closest, which should make for some excitement. Starting from the easiest first....

ASU is overwhelming favorite to pummel the Utes, 13/0 with 12 sweeps.

Second easiest by vote raised at least one of my eyebrows: UCLA 13/0 over Purdue with 5 sweeps. (This looks to me like the upset special. Surprised nobody gives Purdue a chance. Remember Maryland?)

USC 12/1 over UW with 2 sweeps was nearly a third unanimous vote to win.

Wazzu is a clear favorite over Cal, 11/2 with one sweep.

Arizona gets the nod over Oregon 10/3 with 4 sweeps, but the Ducks also got 1 sweep vote.

And this week's closest series should be Stanford 8/5 over Oregon State with 3 sweeps. It should be noted, however, that 4 of those 5 OSU votes are from OSU fans, so take that into consideration.

Message from Dodger Matt

Week 12
All but one of the series this week look to be really good, and our nonconference series should be one of the better series in the nation.

Ore at Ariz

Stan at OSU

UW at USC

Cal at WSU

Utah at ASU

Purdue (XP) at UCLA

Week 11 Series

The conference’s top two teams battle it out in Tucson. Both Arizona and Oregon are fighting for one of the eight national seeds. A series win this weekend will solidify the winning team’s resume for that spot, and give the team the inside track on claiming the conference crown. This series pits the conference’s pitching leader (Oregon) against the offensive leader (Arizona). Arizona is number one in BA, SLG, OBP, runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples, total bases, total atbats, total appearances, sac flies, and steal attempts. They are second in homers and stolen bases. Oregon is eighth or worse in ten of those categories. On the defensive side, Oregon is tops in ERA, OBA, batters SO looking, wins, saves, runners picked off, fewest runs allowed, fewest errors. In contrast, Arizona is in the lower half in the conference in nine defensive and pitching categories, including fielding, errors, hits allowed, hit batters, balks, doubles and triples allowed, runs allowed, ERA, and OBA. Game one should be a pitching duel. After that, watch the slugfest.

A Stanford team on the upswing after beating UCLA two out of three on the road tries to repeat that feat against a struggling Oregon State squad that suffered a series loss to USC after beating UCLA the week before. It’s no question the Beavers play better at home, but playing on the road doesn’t seem to hurt the Cardinal. Stanford and OSU are pretty close in most offensive and defensive categories, but the Cardinal have the edge in practically every one. Given a slight home field advantage to OSU, this should make for a very even series. This series could break the hosting dreams of whichever team fails to win at least two games. Game two is the one to watch.

Washington is still on the inside of the bubble to make the postseason and needs to play about .500 ball for their remaining 13 games. USC is in the same boat. Add to that the fact that both teams have nearly identical conference and overall records and are in 8th and 9th place, and this looks like an even-matched series. Game one should be a good one.

Cal failed to gain lost ground last week, getting swept by Oregon. Wazzu likewise failed to gain by losing two games to ASU. Both teams have few chances left if they want to make the postseason. The Cougars need to win two-thirds of their remaining 16 games. The Bears probably have a little more wiggle room than that, but they have fewer games left. This is probably live or die weekend for both teams.

The inutile Utes deserve a break from the grueling Pac-12 baseball season, so they are traveling to Tempe to lie around the hotel pool, drink some iced tea, and, once a day, get their butts kicked on the diamond by the Sun Devils.

This week’s nonconference series matches a national seed hopeful from the Big Ten against one of the Pac-12’s national seed contenders. Purdue has all the right numbers, and they’re coming from a region that the NCAA wants to reward with regional hosts. All they are missing is a signature series victory over a warm-weather school from a power conference. [Enter UCLA stage left.] But the Bruins aren’t going to be willing victims. Expect both teams to host regardless of this series’s outcome, but Purdue’s national seed aspirations may evaporate if they don’t take two from UCLA. Purdue’s team ERA is #22 nationally at 2.99 (2/100ths higher than Oregon’s). Oddly, that is only third-best in the Big Ten, as Michigan State and Minnesota have better numbers. UCLA’s is 3.44. UCLA’s .398 OBP is 19th nationally; Purdue’s is a Big Ten second-best .382.

Please use the abbreviations in the bullets above, in the order they appear. (Purdue is XP.)
