WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — UCLA junior outfielder Jeff Gelalich has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week and STANFORD junior right-handed pitcher Mark Appel has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 20-26, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday.
In four games last week, Gelalich batted .500, going 7-for-14 with three home runs, five RBI and seven runs. The La Verne, Calif., native logged a .611 on-base percentage and 1.143 slugging percentage, and did not strike out in any of his 18 plate appearances. He belted two homers in a 19-7 rout at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday before clubbing a two-run homer in a 9-3 win on Saturday against No. 25 Baylor. Gelalich has batted .407 with a .741 slugging percentage in UCLA’s first seven games of the season.
This is Gelalich’s first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the 52nd all-time selection for UCLA.
In Appel’s start versus then-No. 7 Texas on Friday, he tossed a no-hitter into the fifth inning after retiring a career-best 10 consecutive batters. The Houston, Texas, product had a shutout into the eighth before his lone hitter in the inning scored. He walked three and scattered three hits in seven-plus innings. Appel (2-0) was awarded the win as the Cardinal upended Texas 7-2.
This is Appel’s first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Stanford’s 76th all-time selection.
