No. 6 ranked CC Carroll opened with a statement win, pounding CC Moody 10-2 at Whataburger Field (home of the AA Corpus Christi Hooks) with an announced attendance of 3,473. Box Score.
O'Shea Dumes earned the win, going four innings, allowing one run on two hits and struck out seven. He also added his first Home Run of the season. Courtney Hawkins struck out the side in a 1-2-3 seventh after going 1-for-4 with a pair of runs and two steals out of the leadoff spot. Chris Cano went 2-for-3 with a Home Run, a walk, 3 Runs and 2 RBI. Juan Frias had half of Moody's 4 hits out of the cleanup spot with an RBI.
No. 30 ranked Klein Collins pulled away late in an 8-1 win over Kingwood after a 5 inning pitcher's duel. Box Score.
Lefty Cory Geisler threw four shutout innings and struck out five, but did allow a run thanks to three walks in spite of throwing 63.4% of his pitches for strikes. His counterpart, Jack Finnegan, allowed two runs (one earned) over 6 innings, striking out four. The two hurlers will be college teammates next year at Texas State.
Perhaps the biggest pitching news from the game came when 2014 INF/RHP Jake Jarvis reportedly touched 93 mph with his fastball. Jarvis struck out one, walked one and allowed one hit. He also went 2-for-3 with a walk, a Run and an RBI at the plate.
CJ Hinojosa smashed a game winning solo Home Run in the 6th to break a 1-1 tie as part of a 2-for-4 night. The Tigers got a huge boost when Hinojosa decided against enrolling early at the University of Texas, where he was expected to compete for the starting SS job this spring.
The Nick Williams Home Run watch has begun!
Williams hit what proved to be a deciding 2-run Home Run in his first at bat of the season in Galveston Ball's 5-3 victory over Channelview.
Perhaps the most exciting performance from opening day came in the Spring-Atascocita matchup. RHP Jeremy Kivel of Spring made a strong impression in a losing effort (1-0 final).
Kivel sat 91-95 during his four innings of work and showed a plus curveball. One scout noted that his raw stuff was reminiscent of Shelby Miller, though he added that his mechanics still need work.
