Olympia (FL) High School got their preseason underway last night with over 100 scouts on hand for their 11-0 win over First Academy. The Titans' pair of high level draft prospects RHP Walker Weickel and OF Jesse Winker are likely to continue drawing large crowds throughout the season.

Weickel got the start and was on a strict pitch count, which caused him to exit after 3 1/3 innings. In that time Weickel struck out seven without allowing a hit or run. His fastball touched 95 mph, while sitting 91-94. PG Scouting Director David Rawnsley noted of Weickel in a recent draft profile (link): "[font=verdana,sans-serif]The big key as to whether Weickel can get into the top half of the first round will be his breaking ball this spring."

Weickel's breaking ball, which typically sat in the 71-74 range last year, was 74-76 with improved spin and break. Which is the result of a concerted work in the offseason to improve the bite on the pitch.

Winker went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk. The slugger who is one of the best power bats in the country just missed hitting his first homer of the season, crushing a no-doubter that ultimately went foul.

MIF/RHP Nick Gordon, an exciting 2014 prospect, also created a buzz. Gordon went 2-for-3 at the plate and pitched in relief, running his fastball up to 91 mph. At this point Nick, who is the son of big league veteran Tom "Flash" Gordon, and younger brother of Dodgers SS Dee Gordon, looks to be one of the top prospects in the class of 2014.

Olympia will be a fun team to watch this season and are expected to be strong contenders in Class 8A in Florida this season.
