WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE sophomore designated hitter Joey DeMichele has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week and OREGON STATE redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Josh Osich has been named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for April 25-May 1, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

DeMichele helped lead Arizona State to a 3-1 week, including a series win over Stanford with his .467 (7-for-15) batting average. The Phoenix, Ariz., native slugged 1.067 in four games and became the first Sun Devil since Jeff Larish in the 2005 College World Series to homer three times in one game when he blasted three on Sunday to clinch the series over the Cardinal. He drove in five runs in the 7-1 win after driving in three with three hits in Friday’s win.

This marks the first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for DeMichele and Arizona State’s Conference-leading 99th all-time Player of the Week selection.

Osich threw the first complete-game no hitter for Oregon State since 1947 as he and the Beavers defeated UCLA, 2-0, on Saturday. The Boise, Idaho, native struck out a career-best 13 and threw the first no-hitter by a Pac-10 pitcher against a league opponent since Stanford’s Jason Middlebrook in 1994 against the Bruins. Osich’s only blemish came in the fourth inning when he issued a walk with two outs. Osich retired the first 11 batters he faced, then the last 16 and went just one over the game’s minimum. This was his first complete game. Osich’s no-hitter was the fourth in OSU history - the last two have been achieved by multiple pitchers each time.

This is the Osich’s first career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor and the 64th all-time selection for Oregon State.

These two probably make up the most obvious pair of player/pitcher of the week selections since I can remember. Joey D had a fabulous weekend. I did a double-take when I saw the stats yesterday show 3 HRs. And how often does anyone no-hit a conference opponent? Props to both kids.
