2011 Top Prospects

Braden Shull  LHP - 2011 - Mt. Pleasant, IA
Kansas State

Shull has been the most impressive 2011 prospect in Iowa this spring, as he’s bumped his velocity up to the 88-90 mph range through better use of his lower half in his delivery. The Kansas State signee should get plenty of late scouting attention.

Jason McMurray  SS - 2011 - West Des Moines, IA
Old Dominion

McMurray’s defense at shortstop is very polished and he showed plus range and excellent balance on difficult plays. He should be able to contribute right away at Notre Dame next year.

Dakota Freese  RHP - 2011 - Cedar Rapids, IA
LSU - Eunice

Freese touched 92 mph in Iowa Spring League play last week and was a steady 88-90 mph this weekend. He mixed in plenty of curveballs and change ups in a solid performance, necessary because his fastball is straight.

Nick Day  OF - 2011 - Solon, IA
Iowa

The slender 6-2, 180 lb Iowa signee has to get stronger to hit at the next level but his athleticism in both centerfield and shortstop stood out and he has plus speed at 6.61 in the 60.

Derrick Loveless  OF - 2011 - Solon, IA
Iowa

Loveless has spent some quality time in the weight room this off season and now checks in a rock solid 6-2, 210, although he still ran a 6.77. His next skill will be learning to start lifting the ball to take advantage of his strength.

Austin Christensen  LHP - 2011 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Nebraska

Ideal pitchers build at 6-6 210. Good tailing fastball, consitently at 86-87 from low effort delivery. Showed improvement with command of changeup. Quality curveball with good depth at 73. Also showed well as OF. High level prospect.

Andrew Hedrick  LHP - 2011 - Polk City, IA
Iowa

Hedrick’s curveball was snapping this weekend and overmatched hitters. He’s still pitching at 85-86 mph, good enough velocity for a southpaw, but scouts are waiting for more.

Taylor Ostrich  SS - 2011 - Carroll, IA
Old Dominion/Indian Hills CC

Ostrich looks the part of a prospect at 6-3, 210 lbs and he and Keaton McKinney showed the best power among all hitters, although Ostrich’s left handed swing is very short for a power hitter his size.

David Kerian  SS - 2011 - Dakota Dunes, SD
Illinois

If Kerian had a defined defensive position he’d rank much higher on the list. The switch-hitter rips it from the left side and runs a 6.66. He’ll likely play outfield at the next level.

Brennan Floss  RHP - 2011 - West Des Moines, IA
College of San Mateo

The 6-5, 185 lb Floss throws a Mariano Rivera type cutter at 83-84 mph as his “fastball” and when he gets in a rhythm working it inside and out there isn’t much hitters at this level are going to be able to do about it.

Jordan Stroschein  OF - 2011 - Marion, IA
Chicago State/Ellsworth CC

Stroschein needs to make some adjustments in his swing plane but he’s a 6-3, 190 lb athlete who runs a 6.73 and threw well from the outfield.

David Stagg  LHP - 2011 - West Des Moines, IA
Indiana State/Heartland CC

Big physical LHP, maintains balance well throughout delivery. Hides the ball, high 3/4 arm slot, throws downhill. Good command at 83-84 mph, knows how to pitch, good depth to curveball.

Brandon Shulista  RHP - 2011 - Solon, IA
Iowa/Iowa Central CC

Lean athletic build, deceptive delivery. Topped at 85, has been up to 86 this spring, good run action. Flashed quality curveball at 73, hard spin with bite, quality secondary offering. Good command of fastball and curve, mixed in rare changeup.

Anthony Gagliardi  OF - 2011 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Indian Hills CC

Solidly built athlete who runs well (6.85 60) with solid arm strength (threw 87 mph). Good contact hitter at present, projects to hit for power with physical maturity.

Blake Louscher  LHP - 2011 - Mason City, IA
Central Michigan

Good pitchers build at 6-4, 205 lbs, has present strength. Online balanced delivery, fastball up to 82, have seen it at 84. Curveball is best present pitch, tight spin with good shape.

Dustin Carlson  C - 2011 - Ely, IA
Long Island University/Southeastern CC

Posted 1.90 pop time in workout, strong thick Catcher's build. Good agility behind the plate, athletic for his size. Good defensive Catcher, has occasional power at the plate.

Jake Tuttle  LHP - 2011 - Mukwonago, WI
Uncommitted

Tall LHP, projectable body. Good balance throughout delivery, loose arm action, topped at 83 with good movement. Inconsistent curveball with 1-7 break flashed potential at times, up to 72, threw it for strikes.

Logan Landon  OF - 2011 - Sioux Falls, SD
Hutchinson CC

Projectable build at 6-2 165, looks young for age. Topped at 83 with tailing action on fastball. Solid changeup, maintains arm speed well. Good all around athlete, solid in outfield, swings the bat well.

Austin Smith  C - 2011 - Davenport, IA
Ellsworth CC

Strong athletic Catcher, soft hands, blocks well. Good raw arm strength, have seen quick release time in the past. Quiet plate approach, strength in swing, has some bat speed.

Justin Hofland  RHP - 2011 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Iowa Western CC

Big athletic build. Solid arm strength, can make tweaks to delivery to increase velocity, topped out at 81 at this event, have seen him up to 86 in the past. Fastball showed cutting action at times, sharp slider at 76.

2012 Top Prospects

Calvin Mathews  RHP - 2012 - Bloomfield, IA
Iowa

The 6-2, 190 lb Mathews has the chance to be the best Iowa prep pitcher since Tampa Bay right hander Jeremy Hellickson. He topped out at 91 mph with a hard downer 75 mph breaking ball and projects to throw harder in the future.

Josh Martsching  SS - 2012 - Bloomfield, IA
Iowa

Mathews’ teammate at Class 2 Davies County High School, Martsching may be a bit overshadowed but is an excellent prospect in his own right. He has a strong left handed swing and touches 86 mph off the mound.

Cristian Munoz  C - 2012 - Las Piedras, PR
Bethune-Cookman

Munoz came all the way from Puerto Rico to play in snow and wind but still was the top catcher. He’s very athletic, including running 6.73, and has a very short and quick swing from the left side of the plate.

Dakota Miller  RHP - 2012 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Heartland CC

Miller is a two-way prospect but he looked best on the mound at this event. He’s toned down his delivery nicely and pounded the strike zone with an 87 mph fastball and a true upper 70’s slider.

Yoonjae Nam  MIF - 2012 - Saint Charles, MO
Evansville

Nam ran a smooth 6.58 and shows his quickness in the middle of the infield. His hitting approach is a bit unorthodox but it generates bat speed that should improve as he gets stronger.

Ozzie Adams  SS - 2012 - Clear Lake, IA
Kirkwood CC

Adams’ physical tools don’t stand out but he’s a dirtbag type of player who squares everything up from the right side and made the top defensive play of the showcase at second base.

Joe Erickson  RHP - 2012 - Urbandale, IA
South Dakota State

Erickson has strong 6-2 build and was up to 86 mph on his fastball. His best pitch might have been his change up, which had nice sink with good arm speed and deception.

Brian Schmiedt  RHP - 2012 - Waukee, IA
Northwest Missouri State

Medium athletic build with room to fill. Slow paced delivery, high 3/4 arm slot. Loose easy arm action, sharp downhill plane. Topped at 85, good spin on 11-5 curveball, showed a developing changeup.

Manuel De Jesus  OF - 2012 - Caguas, PR
Wabash Valley College

Fast athletic OF, posted an impressive 6.61 60-yard dash time. Moves well in the outfield, good routes, loose arm action, good arm strength (threw 85) with accurate throws. Short contact oriented swing, top of the order type hitter.

Sam Norman  LHP - 2012 - Des Moines, IA
Creighton

Tall projectable build. Very good bat speed at times, showed tendency to collapse backside but has tools. Good power potential, solid defensive actions at 1B, interesting prospect to watch.

2013 Top Prospects

AJ Puk  LHP - 2013 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Florida

Puk is a worthy successor to Christensen as a two-way prospect from the left side. He has an easy, sweet swing at the plate and pitches at 83 mph with good command and plenty more to come as he gets stronger.

Brandon Kelley  RHP - 2013 - Evansville, IN
Evansville

Young athletic MIF, projectable body. Solid arm strength for age (82), 83 on the mound. Soft hands, quick release defensively, good footwork. Quick hands offensively, line drive plane, hits to all fields.

Brennan Hammer  OF - 2013 - Cedar Rapids, IA
Heartland CC

Athletic two-way prospect. Short stride on mound, high 3/4 slot, loose arm action. Quick hands, some bat speed, good use of lower half.

2014 Top Prospects

Keaton McKinney  RHP - 2014 - Ankeny, IA
Arkansas

McKinney looks like a senior, with a very strong, well put together 6-3, 200 lb build. He had perhaps the best raw power of any hitter at the event despite his age and also threw 86 mph off the mound.
