Cardinal vs. Columbia Blue Highlights

2016 LHP Spencer Van Scoyoc (Cedar Rapids, IA) was sharp during his 3 inning performance, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 4 hitters. Van Scoyoc topped out at 88 mph with his fastball but the most impressive part of his performance was his 77 mph change up, which he used frequently and with good effect.
RHP Cole Miller (2015, Wildwood, MO) also threw 3 shutout innings for the Cardinal team, featuring a heavy 82-84 mph fastball that produced plenty of ground ball outs, plus a mid-70's slider and change up.
RHP Drew Denkinger (2015, Johnston, IA) showed the best velocity we've ever seen from him, pitching in the 88-90 mph area for 2 innings, with lots of 90's for the Columbia Blue team.
Big 6-foot-5, 210 pound RHP Chase Slota (2015, Lake Villa, IL) threw 3 solid innings for Columbia Blue, sitting consistently in the 85-87 mph range and showing a tight spinning 72 mph curveball. He pounded the zone with both pitches.

C Tyler Garrison (2015, Shawnee, KS) rocked an RBI triple into the right field corner in one at bat and also flew out to near the warning track in deepest centerfield another at bat. MW Underclass BP Highlights
8/23/2014
1B Hunter Lindquist (2016, Spring Lake Park, MN) hits from a spread stance and uses his plus strength and good balance to consistently square the ball and drive it hard.
C Spencer Wiskus (2016, Coralville, IA) has a nice balanced stance and a smooth right handed swing with loose extension out front and solid gap to gap power.
SS Parker Upton (2016, Grand Island, NE) is a switch-hitter and while his left handed swing is solid, we really liked his bat speed and aggressive approach from the right side.
SS Trey Cowley (2016, Urbandale, IA) loves the ball on the inside half and showed the ability to turn on those pitches and drive them with surprising power.
OF Ben Norman (2016, Des Moines, IA) has a loose left handed swing that projects well in tandem with his young 6-foot-2, 165 pound build.
OF Aaron Meers (2016, Kansas City, MO) is very strong for his age at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and the ball jumps hard off his bat. We usually aren't wild about double tap toe triggers but Meers is simple and repeatable and works for him.
SS Mark Vierling (2017, St. Louis, MO) has a top prospect older brother Matt who lost the entire summer to an ankle injury but the family prospect legacy is in good hands moving into the future.
RHP/IF Ty Buckner (2017, St. Louis, MO) is a primary pitcher but had one of the best fundamental swings we saw all batting practice. He's short and direct to the ball with some present bat speed and more to come.
SS Nolan Williams (2017, Kansas City, KS) appears to be a tool monster as an athlete but his hitting ability, despite an early barrel wrap that lengthens his approach to the ball, is very promising as well.
C Cole Johnson (2016, Omaha, NE) has already established his credentials as a top defensive catcher but he's put in his work to get stronger offensively and the effort has paid off with better bat speed and solid gap contact.
RHP Ryan Wyant (2016, (Marion, IA) is another primary pitcher who can teach a number of hitters a thing or two when it comes to sound hitting approaches and how to use your strength. He took an outstanding round of BP.
1B Peter Zimmerman (2016, St. Louis, MO) hits from a very spread stance but manages to stay above the ball, a rarity for spread stance users. He's strong and angular and creates lots of present bat speed.
MW Top Prospect BP Highlights
8/23/2014
OF Ryan Kayhill (2015, Lee's Sumitt, MO) hits from an open stance and uses his hips very well to generate bat speed. He pulled the ball hard in batting practice.
3B Joey Polak (2016, Quincy, IL) is one of the top 2016 hitters in the country, with the strength that comes with a 6-foot-5, 210 pound frame and a right handed swing that is wonderfully short for a hitter that size. It's a swing that will translate very well to better raw stuff.
3B Alec Boehm (2015, Omaha, NE) has added some length to his swing since we saw him three months ago and that will have to be addressed. What doesn't have to be addressed is the huge bat speed and lever Boehm generates from the right side.
IF Christopher Riddle (2015, Omaha, NE) worked through a hand hitch start to his swing square the ball up very well with lots of pull and lift and loose extension out front that took advantage of his compact strength.
OF Luke Farley (2015, Denver, IA) continues to establish himself as one of the better pure hitters in the 2015 class nationally, just not in the Midwest. His swing mechanics, and especially his shift into contact and lower half use, is superior and he's stronger than he's ever been.
3B Kyle Crowl (2016, Council Bluffs, IA) hasn't gained the strength yet that we're waiting patiently before but until that happens he's just using his fast hands and plus bat control to continue to drive the ball hard.
