TOP PROSPECTS
The top prospects who attended Perfect Game’s Sunshine Showcase in New York, from June 10-11.
CLASS OF 2007
1. Shawn Zarraga, c, Trinity Christian HS, Boynton Beach, Fla. Has a pro catcher’s body with good present strength. Light on his feet and showed a tick above-average major league arm. Showed power with the bat as well as an advanced approach at the plate.
2. Curtis Casali, c, New Canaan (Conn.) HS. Has a pro-type frame with good present strength. Solid major league average catch-and-throw player right now. Has power potential.
3. Matthew Tomshaw, lhp, Kingston (N.Y.) HS. Has a loose, easy arm with a fastball up to 88 mph. Projectable body with good arm action. Good feel for pitching.
4. Trevor Reckling, lhp, St. Benedicts HS, Newark, N.J. Showed feel for three pitches, including a fastball in the mid-80s with good life. He also showed a nice changeup and a good slider. Another player that can really pitch.
5. Daniel Barnes, rhp, Manhasset (N.Y.) HS. Commanded two pitches and showed 89 mph velocity with his fastball. A projectable frame and an easy arm action make him one to watch.
6. John Mincone, lhp, Half Hollow Hills East HS, Dix Hills, N.Y. Has real good command of two pitches and can really pitch. Showed a heavy 86 mph fastball and a good, hard slider. Recently coming off Tommy John surgery.
7. Greg Sherry, inf, Delbarton HS, Mensham, N.J. Athletic player with life in his body. Showed bat speed at the plate and nice actions in the infield.
8. Trevor Funk, rhp, Vero Beach (Fla.) HS. Big-bodied righthander with great mound presence. Showed the makings of a nice breaking ball and 85 mph fastball. Recently coming off Tommy John surgery.
9. Andrew Kolmar, of, Delbarton HS, Mendham, N.Y. Has a projectable body and threw an easy 89 mph from the outfield and ran well. The ball comes off his bat well. Strong player with power potential.
10. Anthony Luciano, of, Fox Lane HS, Pound Ridge, N.Y. Athletic outfielder who ran 6.76 seconds in the 60, but could probably run better. Showed good bat speed in BP. Smart player who plays hard.
11. Ryan McGrath, 3b, Newtown (Conn.) HS. Solid all-around player who played well in the games. Showed bat speed with power potential. Competes well.
12. Joey Frabasile, inf, Fordham Prep HS, Hartsdale, N.Y. Projectable body with current life. Showed nice actions in the infield and bat speed with a nice approach at the plate.
13. A.J. Rusbarsky, inf, Colts Neck HS, Freehold, N.J. Hard-nosed, hustle-type player, really showed well in the games. He hit almost everything hard and showed range and arm strength from shortstop.
14. Tucker Nathans, ss, Salisbury School, Warwick, N.Y. Live athletic body, with good actions in the infield. Took one of the best batting practices at the event.
15. Sean Lucas, util, Fishkill (N.Y.) HS. Athletic player who has arm strength and bat speed at the plate. Good feel for pitching; has low 80s fastball but should throw much harder.
CLASS OF 2008/2009
1. Tyler Donovan, c, Iona Prep, Brewster, N.Y. (2009). Live-bodied player with great catch-and-throw mechanics and some present arm strength. Very efficient thrower who also showed promise with the bat.
2. Mike Lubanski, 3b, Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic HS, Collegeville, Pa. (2009). Strong build and projectable frame. He can really swing the bat and showed power to all fields. Younger brother of Kansas City Royals prospect Chris Lubanski.
