TOP 75 2004 Players at
PG National
The Perfect Game
National Showcase was held at Haymarket Field in Lincoln, NE. June 13
– 15. Any of over 100 players could have easily been ranked among the Top
75 prospects at the event.
The 2004 class will take
some time to sort itself out. The obvious first round talents are not so
obvious this year. The last two years the PG National had players like
Scott Kazmir, Sergio Santos, BJ Upton, Jeff Allison,
Delmon Young, Lastings Milledge, Chris Lubanski,
Ryan Harvey and many others who, you just knew, were going to become
early picks, even though it was a year before the draft. While there are a
few “04” pitchers who look like good bets to become first round picks,
it’s difficult to figure out who, of the position players, will be
surfacing over the next year.
Of course this doesn’t
mean there’s a lack of talented position players in the “04” class. In
fact, there’s a good number, higher than usual, of talented high school
catchers. Most all the top major college baseball programs had a field
day watching the talent in Lincoln. We look forward to following all these
players closely over the next year. Several of them will develop and move
up the ladder as we see more of them. Interestingly enough we had two
very good catchers who pitched an inning topping out at 90 mph from the
mound. Chris Garcia from Miami, FL and Chris Kirkland from
Knoxville, TN.
One position player in
Lincoln that looked like a sure fire first round type was Justin Upton.
BJ’s younger brother looks as good as BJ, but with more strength and
speed. Problem is, Justin is a 2005 graduate, but one that would probably
be the first position player picked if he were eligible for the next June
draft.
The pitching in Lincoln
was outstanding. Nearly every pitcher threw high 80s into the 90s. Eric
Davis RHP from Mountain View, CA. showed serious first round
potential. There were several big tall pitchers with MLB fastballs in
attendance. There were also a good number of high level pitchers in the
6’0 tall range. Once again, a hay day for college coaches at Hay Market
Field in Lincoln. The pitching was the highlite of this years national.
Several of the nations highest ranked “04” and a few of the very best “05
pitchers were in Lincoln.
Three players from the
Dominican Republic attended this year’s National. Outfielder Wady
Rufino showed one of the best arms we’ve seen in awhile. Gun readings
of 95 mph from the outfield with his throws showing great accuracy with
plus carry. Rufino also creates excellent bat speed and projects to hit
with big time power. Two young shortstops Vladimer Frias and
Esmil Rogers both showed quick hands, strong arms and outstanding
infield actions. Frias could end up being something “extra special” as he
gets bigger and stronger.
The best 60 time
(electronic) in Lincoln was a 6.44 recorded by Greg Burns OF from
West Covina, CA. Other outstanding electronic times were run by Cale
Iorg SS (6.65) from Knoxville, TN., Joe Spiers INF from San
Bernadino, CA and Justin Upton who were the only others to run in
the 6.6s. Upton was timed at 6.59 with the stop watch. The laser time
usually takes a tenth or more off, so he could have recorded a 6.4 or
better electronically. Several others ran in the 6.7s.
All in all, nearly every
player in Lincoln is a high level Division One or MLB Draft prospect. The
following list was put together using the entire PG Staff as evaluators.
As you go down the list, even into the “other top prospects” an argument
could be made that all belong in the top 75. From top to bottom the field
was that good.
PG National Top Prospects
Player Name
Pos. High School
Hometown, St. Ht./Wt.
B/T
- 1. Davis, Erik
RHP Mountain View Mountain
View, CA 6-3 / 180 R/R
- Three quality
pitches in his 90-92 FB, biting curve and deceptive change and
outstanding command of each of them. The physical and mechanical
similarities to Mark Prior don't hurt his evaluation. He could easily
develop into the top high school pitcher in the 04 class.
-
- 2. Casey, Tate
RHP Longview
Longview, TX 6-6 / 220 R/R
- A extra big pitcher
with a simple delivery and a loose, quick arm. Casey threw lots of 91's
and complimented those with a quality change up. If there is a
candidate to throw 95 mph consistently from this event, it's Casey. The
word is that football may get him first as a quarterback.
-
- 3. Gale, Andrew RHP
Phillips Exeter Acad. Durham,
NH 6-6 / 220 R/R
- Gale, the son of
former ML pitcher Rich Gale, showed quality pitches in a 88-90 mph
fastball, 80 mph slider and 78 mph change and he used them with purpose
and maturity.
-
- 4. Jostock, Will
RHP Lapeer West Lapeer,
MI 6-6 / 192 R/R
- At 6-6, 200 lbs,
Jostock is still growing and will be a horse someday. He has some
mechanical issues but threw 88-91 (we've seen him at 93-94 before) on a
great downward plane.
-
- 5. Davis, Chris
IF/RHP Longview Longview,
TX 6-3 / 205 L/R
- It would surprise no
one if Davis topped many prospect lists before the 2004 draft,
especially with some mechanical adjustments at the plate. He hit balls
completely out of the stadium in BP and touched 90 off the mound.
-
- 6. Guerra, Javier
RHP Denton Ryan Denton,
TX 6-2 / 180 R/R
- Guerra's unique
delivery can best be described as controversial, but there was no
questioning he had the quickest and loosest arm in Lincoln. He Topped
out at 91-92 but we've seen him at 96 mph.
-
- 7. McGee, Jacob
LHP Edward C. Reed Sparks,
NV 6-2 / 190 L/L
- McGee combines
excellent pitchability with a deceivingly quick 87-89 mph fastball and
plenty of projectablity. Give him a hard breaking ball and the ski's
the limit.
-
- 8. Jones, Chris
RHP/OF Mission Viejo Dove
Canyon, CA 6-2 / 210 R/R
- Power both off the
mound (90-92 with excellent command and life) and at the plate, where he
hit several long BP home runs.
-
- 9. Johnson, Blake RHP
Parkview Baptist Baton Rouge,
LA 6-4 / 195 R/R
- We've seen Johnson
much better than the 86-90 mph he threw in Lincoln. He's a big, strong
multi-talented athlete with a high ceiling.
-
- 10. Portice, Eamon
RHP Ft. Lauderdale Oakland
Park, FL 6-1 / 160 R/R
- Unquestionably one
of the loosest, quickest arms in Lincoln. Portice's deliberate Hideo
Nomo delivery adds deception to his 89-91 mph fastball.
-
- 11. Rufino, Wady
OF Colegio Olympus Santo
Domingo, DR 6-1 / 190 R/R
- Super mid to better 90s arm from the
outfield and big time power potential. As good a arm as we’ve seen in 9
years on a high school age player.
-
- 12. Kopp, David
RHP Coral Springs Coral
Springs, FL 6-3 / 185 R/R
- By mixing arm angles
and four effective pitches including a 89 mph fastball, curve, slider
and very deception change up, Kopp presents a wide and very difficult to
hit arsenal for hitters. Projects in a big way.
-
- 13. Cordier, Erik
RHP Southern Door Sturgeon
Bay, WI 6-3 / 190 R/R
- We've seen Cordier
better many times, but he still threw 88-91 and flashed an effective
slider.
-
- 14. Iorg, Cale
SS Karns
Knoxville, TN 6-2 / 175 R/R
- The son of former
Major Leaguer Garth Iorg, Cale showed above average speed (6.68) and
solid tools in the field and at the plate. A little more strength could
make him a top round pick.
-
- 15. Garrison, Seth
IF/RHP Coppell
Coppell, TX 6-4 / 200 S/R
- Garrison's plus arm
and smooth actions at shortstop are even more impressive considering his
6-4 frame. He'll need to show more with the bat, though, and could
evolve into a top pitching prospect. He threw 90 in Lincoln.
-
- 16. Clark, Preston C
Rockwall
Rockwall, TX 5-10 / 178 R/R
- Next to “05” Judtin
Upton, maybe the top position player at the event, Clark also heads a
group of solid '04 high school catchers. Along with an intense,
leadership oriented makeup, Clark had good defensive tools and a quick,
powerful bat.
-
- 17. Beranek, Tyler
1B Waukesha South Waukesha,
WI 6-5 / 215 R/R
- 2004 is a top year
for Wisconsin baseball. At 6-5, 225, Beranek looks and moves like a NFL
tight end and has enormous power potential down the road.
-
- 18. Kubin, Jared
OF/1B Oakton Oakton,
VA 6-3 / 225 R/R
- Kubin has as much
raw power as any player in the country. We'll see him plenty later in
the summer when he's adjusted to wood bats.
-
- 19. Encinas, Anthony
RHP/OF Santa Fe Norwalk,
CA 6-0 / 185 L/R
- Featured a 91 mph
fastball and sharp 76 mph curveball, but his two biggest pluses were his
deceptive delivery and his above average athleticism.
-
- 20. Kirkland,
ChristopherC/P South
Doyle Knoxville, TN 6-3 /
190 R/R
- Kirkland showed a
above average arm and consistent release times in the 1.80 range. At
6-3, 190 and lanky, he's very projectable.
-
- 21. Bergesen, Brad
RHP/OF Foothill
Pleasanton, CA 6-2 / 215 L/R
- Outstanding arm, threw low 90s and can
pitch. Athletic kid who loves to play. Hits and plays the outfield very
well.!
-
- 22. Garabedian, Alex C
Columbus Miami,
FL 6-2 / 210 R/R
- Garabedian had to
leave the showcase early due to an injury, but showed us plenty of his
above average bat speed and power. He'll need to work constantly on
keeping his body loose.
-
- 23. Molina, Randy SS
3B/1B South Gate South Gate,
CA 6-4 / 210 L/R
- Big time potential with the bat.
Excellent straight away power with wood. Arm plays, needs to run a bit
better.
-
- 24. Lentz, Andy
IF/OF Woodinville
Woodinville, WA 6-0 / 185 L/R
- The latest in the
Lentz family legacy, Ryan swings a potent bat from the left side. His
agility and solid average arm give him the ability to play a wide
variety of positions.
-
- 25. Garcia, Christian
C/RHP Gulliver Prep Miami,
FL 6-4 / 175 S/R
- We finally got see
defensive wizard Garcia and his plus arm on the mound and were
impressed: 88-90 with some sharpness to his curveball.
-
- 26. Burns, Greg OF
Walnut West
Covina, CA 6-3 / 180 L/L
- Burns easily posted
the fastest 60 time in Lincoln at 6.44 and showed just enough with the
bat to give us hope that he'll improve with added strength.
-
- 27. Arencibia, Jonathan
C Westminster Christian Miami,
FL 6-2 / 200 R/R
- We've seen Arencibia
better before and will see him better in the future. He's got solid
defensive tools and an advanced hitting approach for a young catcher.
-
- 28. Dunigan, Joseph
OF St. Ignatius College Prep Chicago,
IL 6-1 / 205 L/L
- Physically Dunigan
looks like something the Chicago Bears served up. He has enormous
strength and average speed and arm strength. If his skills catch up to
his body, watch out!
-
- 29. Poterson, John
C/1B Chandler
Chandler, AZ 6-1 / 215 S/R
- Poterson has a
strong, athletic body and some serious power from the left side of the
plate. He also plays the game with an infectious emotion that we really
liked.
-
- 30. French, Luke
LHP/1B Heritage
Littleton, CO 6-3 / 220 L/L
- After he threw 87
mph across the infield, everyone was looking forward to seeing French on
the mound. He showed very good pitchability but was only 85-86 mph. We
bet we'll see more next time.
-
- 31. Lalor, John
RHP Houston Germantown,
TN 6-7 / 220 R/R
- Scouts play "When
will it happen?" with the 6-6, 190 lb. Lalor. His size and loose arm
mean that his current 84-86 will jump up into the 90's at some point.
We'll wait patiently.
-
- 32. Fisher, Michael
SS/OF Montgomery Bell Nashville,
TN 6-2 / 187 S/R
- No single tool
stands out, but Fisher is solid across the board both offensively and
defensively in a draft year that features few middle infield prospects.
-
- 33. Juhl, Brian
C Katy High School Katy,
TX 5-11 / 185 S/R
- Juhl impressed us
with his extremely professional and polished approach to the game. He
receives the ball well, plays hard and throws just as quickly and
accurately in games as in drills. Being a switch hitting catcher is a
plus.
-
- 34. Pacheco, Jordan
RHP/IF La Cueva
Albuquerque, NM 6-0 / 185 R/R
- Pacheco came off a
solid performance at second base to show the best curveball at the event
the last day, a 77-79 mph hammer that was a present plus big league
pitch. He pitched at 86-88 with his fastball.
-
- 35. Bell, Bobby
RHP/OF Ft. Worth Country Day Aledo,
TX 6-4 / 180 S/R
- Good athlete with a great body. Throws
90 ftrom the hill.
-
- 36. McDowell, Dontavias
OF/P Tucker School Atlanta,
GA 6-0 / 190 R/R
- For pure athletic
ability, no one touches McDowell, a nationally recruited football
quarterback. He hasn't had nearly as many baseball repetitions as
someone like Carl Crawford did at the same age, though.
-
- 37. McGonigle, Mark
OF Bellaire
Houston, TX 6-2 / 180 S/R
- The switch-hitting
McGonigle stung the ball from both sides of the plate virtually every at
bat for three days. His other tools are playable but it will be his bat
that carries him.
-
- 38. Pond, Ryan
3B/P Western Branch Chesapeake,
VA 6-2 / 225 R/R
- Pond is a college
coaches' dream, a power hitting third baseman who can come in and throw
90+ off the mound
-
- 39. Webb, Ryan
RHP Clearwater Catholic Palm Harbor,
FL 6-6 / 190 R/R
- A prototypical
projectable 6-6 pitcher, Webb has taken huge steps forward in the last
six months and showed an 88-90 mph fastball and a sharp hi-70's slurve.
-
- 40. Bowman, Willie
3B/1B Carson Carson
City, NV 6-2 / 200 R/R
- Bowman was one of
the best defensive players in Lincoln at each of the three infield
positions we tried him at. He'll play as high as his bat takes him.
-
- 41. Lee, Austin
RHP Faith Academy Fairhope,
AL 6-2 / 190 R/R
- Excellent RHP with
MLB average heater and much more.
-
- 42.
Longfellow, Dale
RHP Affton St.
Louis, MO 6-2 / 200 R/R
- Longfellow showed a
hard sinking 87-90 mph fastball and a 74-76 curveball that had good
action when it was down.
-
- 43. Hanks, Parker C
De La Salle
Danville, CA 6-1 / 215 R/R
- Hanks was one of the
strongest players at the event and it showed in his quick, powerful
bat. We'd like to see more of his defense but he's athletic enough to
play other positions as well.
-
- 44. Spiers, Joseph
IF Arrowhead Christian San
Bernardino, CA 5-10 / 185 R/R
- What Spiers lacks in
height he makes up for in tools and skills. He has above average speed
and some pop in his bat. Second base is probably is future position.
-
- 45. Hiles, Tanner RHP
West
Knoxville, TN 6-1 / 220 R/R
- Hiles came into the
showcase with very limited mound experience, but showed a 88-92 mph
fastball with excellent boring and sinking life. He'll be fun to watch
develop.
-
- 46. Romanowicz, Will RHP
Malvern Prep West Chester,
PA 6-0 / 170 R/R
- Romanowicz's tight
76 mph curve and diving 80 mph change up were two outstanding off speed
pitches and complimented his 87-90 mph fastball well.
-
- 47. Harrington, Michael OF
Xavier Cedar
Rapids, IA 6-1 / 185 L/R
- Although Harrington
will have to work hard on finding his best position, he already has one
of the better pure left handed bats in the country. He hits all types
of pitches hard to all fields.
-
- 48. Salas, Steve
RHP St. Paul
Whittier, CA 6-0 / 180 R/R
- If he was 6-4
instead of 6-0, Salas would be way up the list. He had a quick arm, a
87-89 mph fastball that jumped on hitters and a nasty big breaking 72
mph curveball that they had no chance on.
-
- 49. Hollander, Michael
IF Jesuit
Mandeville, LA 5-11 / 180 R/R
- Hollander has two
present average tools in his running speed and arm strength, but was
most impressive were his short quick actions both in the field and at
bat. Surprising power!
-
- 50. Radmacher, Timothy RHP
Rosemount Rosemount,
MN 6-0 / 170 R/R
- Excellent athletic RHP who can throw in
the 90s.
-
- 51. Whittemore, Clay OF
Cullman Cullman,
AL 6-1 / 165 R/R
- Very good all-round playe with MLB tools
and projection.
-
- 52. Collins, Joel C
Cardinal Carter Richmond
Hill, ON 6-1 / 195 R/R
- Very good catcher with strong arm and
line drive bat.
-
- 53. Sferra, J.J
OF Mountain Pointe Phoenix,
AZ 5-11 / 155 L/L
- As he gets stronger he’ll become one of
the best in the country.
-
- 54. Hargrove, Ricky
RHP/OF Katy Katy,
TX 6-1 / 175 R/R
- Good RHP and athlete who flirts with 90
mph once in awhile.
-
- 55. Herren, K.C.
OF/C/P Auburn Auburn,
WA 6-1 / 205 S/R
- Big strong athlete who can really swing
the bat and much more.
-
- 56. Bales, Daniel
LHP Kennedy Cedar
Rapids, IA 6-3 / 185 R/L
- One of the hardest to hit lefties in
high school baseball. Plus curveball!
-
- 57. Bowman, Drew LHP/1B
Dakota Ridge Morrison,
CO 6-3 / 175 R/L
- A loose, lanky 6-4
southpaw with long arms and loose wrists, Bowman threw 87 mph with a
solid curveball. He's a very good athlete and has tons of room for
improvement.
-
- 58. Hale, Alex
C Creighton Prep Omaha,
NE 6-2 / 190 R/R
- Many catchers made
the top 65 list, a promisingly high number given recent trends at that
position. Ruiz and Hale are very similar players; both have excellent
catcher's bodies and advanced defensive skills. Where they end up will
be determined by the adjustments they make with their bats.
-
- 59. Ruiz, Jett
C/1B Francis Parker Lakeside,
CA 6-2 / 200 R/R
- Many catchers made
the top 65 list, a promisingly high number given recent trends at that
position. Ruiz and Hale are very similar players; both have excellent
catcher's bodies and advanced defensive skills. Where they end up will
be determined by the adjustments they make with their bats.
-
- 60. Williams, D'Korian
OF Lamar Consolidated Sugar Land,
TX 5-11 / 170 L/L
- A star three-sport
athlete, Williams was the best defensive outfielder in Lincoln and
showed a tick above average speed.
-
- 61. McBurrows, Thad LHP/OF
L ake Wales Lake Wales, FL
6-1 / 190 L/L
- Lefty with 90+ heater and very athletic.
-
- 62. Krieger, Adam RHP
Countryside Clearwater,
FL 6-4 / 215 R/R
- Hard telling how good he might end up
being. Already near 90 mph.
-
- 63. Molinaro, Bobby
SS/2B American Heritage Delray Beach,
FL 5-9 / 160 S/R
- Outstanding all-round baseball player.
Big time DI college star.

play the game too.

and a solid right handed stroke at the plate. Strong arm and catching
ability.
-
- 66. Jones, Daryl
1B/OF Westchester Gardena,
CA 6-4 / 210 R/R
- Jones will play all
summer at 16 years old and his skills show it against older
competition. But at 6-4, 210 with enormous strength and bat speed, his
potential is huge.
-
- 66. Zalopany, Leonard
3B/1B Waimea Koloa,
HI 6-4 / 205 L/R
- Big strong athlete with serious hitting
potential.
-

- Excellent player who can really swing
the lumber.
-
- 69. Schweikert, Ryan 1B

- Very big and strong left handed bat. Big
time power potential.
-
- 70. Conroy, David RHP

we see him. Keep an eye on this kid.
