As always the P G Indoor Showcase was loaded with talent. The following players stood out at the event held in Perfect Games Indoor Training Facility.
| TOP - 2002's |
| 1. Zach Hammes |
02 |
6'7/220 |
RHP |
Iowa City, IA |
| Hammes was, as usual, outstanding. In 24 fastballs charted, he never got below 89 mph and threw many 91s and 92s, topping at 93. The ball comes out of his hand as good as anyone in the country and he has the best 2-seamer we've seen in a long time, it's devastating. He threw his breaking ball around the 77 mph range. It was a sharp breaker and should end up being a plus pitch. He also threw a few nice changeups, but could add a little velocity to that pitch. Hammes is fast becoming early round material and very possibly 1st round material. We think he will easily throw in the mid 90s before long and with plus-plus life. He has signed with the U. of Iowa, but first there's the draft. |
| 2. James Peterson |
02 |
6'1/215 |
OF |
Winterset, IA |
| Peterson looks very good this year. He is one of the best left-handed bats in the country. His swing looks better than ever, more under control. The ball jumps off his bat and he has no problem handling the wood. 'Pete' has hit some of the hardest hit balls we have seen, with wood, in all of high school baseball. He has signed with Wichita State, but is an excellent draft prospect. |
| 3. Eric Wordekemper |
02 |
6'2/190 |
RHP |
Storm Lake, IA |
| Wordekemper looked good for the early season, throwing in the 88-89 range. His changeup looked good as always and he is fast developing a good breaking ball in the mid 70s range. He has outstanding command of the fast ball, which should be in the 90 or better range this spring. Eric is a good athlete who would be a position prospect if he wasn't such a good pitcher. He has signed with Creighton and unless he's drafted in a good position, they got a good one. |
| 4. Jason Berken |
02 |
6'0/175 |
RHP |
DePere, WI |
| Berken, has one of the fastest arms we have seen over the last year. He's an outstanding 3 sport star in high school. He threw 88-89 at the indoor and we believe he has thrown harder than that. His curveball is a plus pitch that borders on unhittable at times. He throws the breaking ball 76 mph and it's a real sharp bender. He shows outstanding command of both fastball and breaking ball. Berken can pitch at any college program in the country, but is unsigned as of now. Being from the Green Bay area, he is fairly unknown nationally. |
| 5. Nick Jones |
02 |
6'2/190 |
P/OF |
Rock Island, IL |
| Jones is another outstanding athlete with a good arm. His future may be as an outfielder, he has plus speed and can hit with power. On the mound he showed a 87-89 fastball and it looked pretty easy for him. He could develop into an interesting draft prospect over the spring. |
| 6. Cody Doonan |
02 |
6'3/185 |
RHP |
Cedar Rapids, IA |
| Doonan threw a bit better when we saw him two weeks earlier. He was still a consistent mid 80s. Doonan is yet another outstanding athlete with a strong arm. We think he's a real sleeper who has a good chance to be at least a draft & follow this June. He's going the Juco route. |
| 7. Ben Wallace |
02 |
6'0/185 |
C |
Joliet, IL |
| Wallace looks like a good receiver with a strong arm. He seems to have a great feel for the position. His bat looks good sound approach and quick hands. He looks like a good line drive hitter with some big power potential. |
| Top - "03" |
| 1. Adam Miller |
03 |
6'0/180 |
RHP |
Knoxville, IA |
| Top college programs should be all over Miller. He has a special arm and outstanding command. He uses his body well and threw 89-91 at the indoor. His breaking ball is a real good one and he showed an 80+ slider that could become a very good power breaking ball. He is very talented and has a good feel for pitching. We think he might end up being one of those rare mid 90s guys. |
| 2. Tony Harper |
03 |
5'11/210 |
P/C |
Oak Creek, WI |
| We've always liked Harper a lot. He is a big time catching prospect who can hit and hit with power. There's no question about his arm strength. He showed 88-89 velocity from the hill at the indoor. He also spins his curveball up there in the mid 70s. He's a pro level prospect as a catcher and a high level DI prospect as a pitcher. Either way, he's for real! |
| 3. John Sokoll |
03 |
6'4/210 |
LHP |
Ames, IA |
| Sokoll needs to be followed closely. He has a great pitchers frame and his arm works very smoothly. He throws downhill with great leverage and a whip-like arm. He showed consistent mid 80 velocity, but there's a whole lot more in him. He may have as high of a ceiling as any "03" lefty out there. |
| 4. John Beck |
03 |
6'1/220 |
RHP |
Bettendorf, IA |
| Beck is a solidly built RHP with a very strong arm. He threw 87-89 at the indoor with relative ease. His curve was a good one in the mid 70s. He is very muscular, but looks fairly lean for his 6'1/220 frame. He will be interesting to follow. We plan to keep a close eye on him. |
| 5. Adam Roos |
03 |
6'3/170 |
RHP |
Thunder Bay, Ont. |
| Roos is a nice looking athlete who projects out of site. He could make some mechanical adjustments that would improve his velocity. He does drag his arm a bit, but still threw 85 while warming up. He also looked like a very good hitter. He creates some big time bat speed. Definitely one to watch closely for "03". |
| 6. Blake Ruff |
03 |
5'11/180 |
C |
Plymouth, IN |
| Ruff is a little raw, but flashes some outstanding potential. He appears to be very strong and can swing the bat. His arm is an asset and he's someone to keep a close eye on. He just needs to smooth out his actions a little and reap the benefits. |
| 7. Alex Turk |
03 |
6'1/190 |
3B/P |
Elgin, IL |
| Turk is a good looking catcher who could end up being quite a prospect. He shows arm strength and quickness behind the plate. The ball jumps off his bat and he flashes power potential. He hit a couple of the hardest hit balls at the indoor. Keep an eye on this bat! |
| 8. Jake Gantz |
03 |
6'0/205 |
LHP |
Chicago, IL |
| Gantz is an interesting lefty who might develop into an outstanding prospect. He topped out at 84 mph, but looked like he has much more. His curve was a good one thrown in the 73 mph area. He has a quick arm! Also he can really swing the bat, making you think he is a 2-way prospect. |
| 9. James Nikolaides |
03 |
5'7/170 |
C |
Dedham, MA |
| Nikolaides is not the tallest prospect we've seen, but he does some very interesting things. He's a good catcher who seems to know what he's doing. He blocks and receives very well. He appears to be very tough and more importantly he can definitely hit. He's aggressive and flat out smokes line drives. |
| Top - "04" |
| 1. Brandon Hall |
04 |
6'2/185 |
C/1B |
Waukesha, WI |
| Hall is a nice looking athlete that swings the bat real well from both sides of the plate. He has the makings of a major league body and he is a definite pro follow. He showed one of the nicest swings we've seen out of anyone in the 04 class. There's no question he is going to hit! Remember his name! |
| 2. Danny Bales |
04 |
6'2/210 |
LHP |
Cedar Rapids, IA |
| Bales was actually a little more impressive two weeks ago. He topped out at 89 at the last indoor. He still looked very good with consistent mid 80s velocity. Bales has a very fast arm and has really improved his mechanics. He used to throw drastically across body, but he looks great now. He's a definite top prospect in the 04 class. |
| 3. Robert Yodice |
04 |
6'0/185 |
C |
Staten Island, NY |
| Yodice is a name scouts will recognize in the future. He is at one of the nations strongest high school programs, Xaverian, Brooklyn. We think this will really work to his advantage. He's a very good catcher with a good arm. His bat is a potential plus tool. He creates excellent bat speed, stays under control and hit line drives off of some of the hardest throwers at the indoor. |
| 4. Ryan Sheldon |
04 |
6'6/210 |
RHP |
Kearney, NE |
| Sheldon is the definition of the baseball word projectable. He didn't show great velocity at the indoor, but left us feeling like he will, down the road. His arm works well and he is 6'6 and a slim 210 pounds. |
| Highest Honorable Mention |
| Alphabetical order |
| Ryan Arp |
04 |
5'11/160 |
C |
Cedar Rapids, IA |
| Arp is a good looking catcher/hitter who we think will develop into a top college prospect over the next few years. |
| Brandon Ford |
03 |
6'0/165 |
P/SS |
Tipton, IA |
| Ford shows outstanding mechanics and the ability to pitch. As he gets stronger his velocity will increase. |
| Aaron Manes |
03 |
6'2/230 |
C |
Lincoln, NE |
| Manes is a big catcher with arm strength. He could develop into a good power hitter. |
| Greg Sabers |
03 |
6'1/165 |
IF/P |
Jesup, IA |
| Sabers is a good athlete with a nice arm. We plan to watch him closely this spring. |
| Jon Trivett |
04 |
6'1/160 |
C |
Danville, IN |
| Trivett is young and as he learns more about catching technique, he could become a good one. Right now his bat is his best tool, he can swing it! |
